Hi so I was looking around for a software that can convert mkv files to avi because the sub titles do not show up in the mkv format. I tried google but all the software you need to pay for it to use the converter. So does anyone know a mkv to avi converter that is free use?

VLC should be able to do it as well. The subs are hardcoded? Does VLC list a subtitle stream?

I've used KMP for everything and never had a problem. But the BSplayer is extremely good at subtitles. The free player I think shows an ad or something before playing. http://www.bsplayer.org/en/bs.player/product/bs.player_/ If you read the features it talks about embedded subtitles which may be how mkv includes subs. Or it could just mean hardcoded. I don't want you to download a host of players, I'll look for an encoder which is what you asked for in the first place.

Dr. DivX can probably convert MKV to .DIVX (it's the same as .AVI; you can just change the extension if the .DIVX gives you any trouble). Virtual Dub might work; I'm not sure if it works with MKV files, but it does a great job converting MPEG to AVI. There's an open source tool called "AllToAVI" that will do it too. Here's some links:
    Dr. DivX http://www.majorgeeks.com/Dr._DivX_d5208.html
    VirtualDub http://www.majorgeeks.com/VirtualDub__d5523.html
    AllToAVI http://sourceforge.net/project/platformdownload.php?group_id=156812
Here's guide that has tons of info about converting all sorts of different files (incl. MKV) to different formats. It's full of screenshots, links, Q & A, etc. Should be helpful: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic284288.html
And of course, the home page for the above link is www.videohelp.com and I think the name says it all. Another great site for media related stuff is www.afterdawn.com Both have forums and downloads and how-to guides.

Good luck! I hope this helps!

EDIT- I forgot to add: Most conversion apps for video have seperate settings for subtitles. If these settings are ignored or left at default, chances are you won't get any subtitles, so be sure to make sure you have all your settings correct.

If you need a shareware, Why not try MKV to AVI with Subtitle which also has the function of converting your MKV video files to AVI (even your mkv file contain subtitle)

If you need a freeware, maybe alltoavi is a solution for you, you can find it on sourceforge
