MMC - Text Too Small!

    Hello,

I have a Gateway Laptop running Windows XP SP3. Several days ago, I noticed that several windows from the Microsoft Management Console were featuring extremely small text in certain places. They include:

    - The description columns on the left side of the Services.msc window and Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)
    - Any text pages in the "Help" file for MMC.

I tried reinstalling SP3, as well as installing MMC 3.0 from the Microsoft website, but the problem is still occurring. I am in contact with Microsoft Support through e-mail, but they have yet been unsuccessful in solving the issue.

I think a virus may be the problem; over the past few days, malware scanners have found different traces of the Virtumonde/Vundo virus (along with others, but this one has been consistent). I have no other clue as to what prompted this problem.

I have attached my logs after running the procedure outlined in the "Windows XP Cleaning Procedure" thread of this forum.

Thanks for any help you can give!

    Here are the other attachments:

    - ComboFix log
    - An additional log from SuperAntiSpyware from the previous day, when I happened to do my first scan and more issues were uncovered.

    Thanks again!

P.S. I'd like to attach a picture of the issue, but I can't seem to create a screenshot with a small enough file size. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thank you.

Alright, issue solved...Microsoft finally came up with the answer.

I never would have guessed it, but I had to change the text size in Internet Explorer...I changed it from medium to largest, and then back to medium, and now everything is fine...text sizes normal in the Microsoft Management Console. Thanks anyways, though...I was having some issues with popups and extra loading bars on bootup, but those are gone thanks to the initial malware guide on this forum.

    Thanks again.

You're welcome and welcome to Major Geeks!

I'm happy to hear you got your text size issue resolve. Even though it was not a malware issue, it is a good thing you ran the READ & RUN ME since you had a bunch of malware issues. Let's finish doing a couple things and then cleanup from running the READ & RUN ME.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of Java:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3

    Now delete the below file:
    C:\WINDOWS\BM1bb4d007.txt

    Now reboot your PC.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. You can uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now.
    2. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combo-fix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combo-fix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combo-fix folder from combofix.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hello,

Thanks for all your help. The registry file did work successfully. A couple of things:

    - I could not find C:\WINDOWS\BM1bb4d007.txt on my computer (I did uninstall the old and download the new version of Java, though)

    - Also, can I keep SUPERAntiSpyware and HijackThis? I'd like to keep the first for future malware scans, and the second to make logs for forums if I encounter other problems.

    Thanks again!

If you want to keep them that's fine but if you do ever come here in the future for help you will have to make sure you are using the proper versions that we currently use. When you run updates for SUPERAntispyware, it does not update the program version. Only the core and the trace versions are updated. Thus, you would more than likely be out of date with what we want you to be running.

However HijackThis is embedded into the MGtools folder, thus if you deleted that folder it is already gone. Note at this forum, we are rarely if ever going to ask you to attach a HijackThis log because while it still has its uses, it is not an effective representation of whether a PC is clean or not. That is why we run all the tools we run. All of scans combined together, give us a much, much better feel for your PC's malware status.
