I have been having trouble with the audio service on windows. I checked the dependencies and found that MMCSS was one of them and seems to be the problem as it is not started.

When I look at it , its description says <Failed to read description. Error Code 998>. and when I try to start it says "Windows could not start service on local computer. Error 193:0xc1". When I try to look at its properties it says (helpfully) "Configuration Manager: A general error occurred".

I have home Vista on Dell Inspiron 1720 and have been soundless for weeks! Now at wits end. Any help or suggestions gratefully received.

Make sure the audio has been started by Windows:

Click Start > Run > type services.msc - then click OK.
In the new window - Scroll down to "Windows Audio", right-click on it and select Properties.
Another new window - set the startup type to Automatic, click Apply and then click Start.

Windows audio won't start because of its dependency on mmcss. And I don't know how to fix mmcss problem.

    Any ideas?

    Try the following:

    Open regedit.
    Migrate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Audiosrv\Dep
    remove MMCS

    Go to services.msc
    Disable MMCS.

Now try to start the audio.

I just want to state this is a work-a-round only. There should still be a fix in the works. Hopefully soon. :)

Btw, when Vista sp1 comes out, this may be set back to what it originally was, but it may not. I recommend setting the original registry setting back, re-anable mmcs, then install sp1. But, who really knows what the consequences are in the future.

    BTW, glad it worked! :)
