I just finished building my first computer... go me... I am having problems getting the mother board to actually turn on... I hit the power button on my case and nothing happens... no system beep, no magic mobo led light turn on. I am wondering if it is my mother board, or the wiring from the power button on my case... any thoughts?

    hrm. let's make a checklist:

make sure all the power cables are plugged into the motherboard (the 20 pin atx cable and the 4 pin atx12v cable)
make sure the power supply switch is turned on (the switch is on the I, not the O) (and yes, i've goofed up like that before)
make sure the power strip is turned on, and if the outlet is linked to a light switch, make sure that's on too (i've also goofed up like that!)
if it still doesn't work, use a screw driver to short the pins on the mobo where the power switch goes.

    tell us if that works.

alright... i double checked all the power connections... the I O switch on the power supply is on because all my fans work... i know the mother board is recieving some kind of power because the cpu fan works... but the rest of the stupid thing wont... i tried arcing the prongs with a screw driver... nothing happened, and it still doesnt turn on... ):

I forgot to mention... i dont have my video card in yet... i was suppose to put it in today, but UPS got delayed so i will have it on monday. A friend of mine said it might be that, but other people have told me that it shouldnt matter

If the fan works, make sure that the buttons on the case are plugged in the right place.

Are you sure that the CPU is inserted correctly? I have a feeling that might have something to do with it. Your mobo is getting power since the fans are all working, but if there's something wrong with the CPU, the boot process wont contiunue (I believe the first process of boot is the "power good" process right?)

this is kind of stupid that i didnt mention this earlier, but all my fans start before i hit the power button on the case... including the cpu fan... is this good?

"i tried arcing the prongs with a screw driver... nothing happened"

    Now your asking for trouble.
Hope ya didnt fry anything with your arcing.

Video card not in yet, that's not your problem, you only need video card to see stuff, is what I call visual aid, not required for system check.

Most likly wiring problem, "Refer to mobo manual" case wiring to mobo front pannel header, I'd say ya have wires mixed up.

Nothing should powerup till you push the case power button on the front of case.

ive checked the mobo book probably 15 times... it is wired correctly.

    If you say so.
Check the case wiring something may be grounded, if the board is wired correctly and you have fans and stuff running, and the switch on the case does nothing, something is completeing the circuit

Another thought, try removing all wires/leads from case to mobo front pannel header, if see if your fans power up!

What Mobo brand and model is this, the case too!

    Last resort RMA!

The fan does work whenever the connection to the case is removed.

Case : Diablo tek black demon
    Mobo: Asus K8V 2800

Alright... I called Asus a few days ago... i talked to one of their techs, he said that the bios chip on the mobo was the wrong chip for the processor... way to go tigerdirect. He said its not that big of a problem to fix, but he was worried that the LED light on the mobo wasnt going on when i turned the computer on... he told me to send the motherboard back to tigerdirect... I just moved into school, so my dad is going to call tigerdirect for me tomorrow and try to con a new processor and board out of them :) thanks for all the help :)
