I recently had my motherboard replaced with a different version, had my operating system updated to service pack 2, and had my hard drive replaced. I have the same modem, however after the new motherboard was installed it connects at around 31k rather than the usual 52k. What can I do to make it connect normally again?

    System Info:
    SoftV92 Data Fax Modem
Windows XP home, service pack 2
    --system: ECS M825G

I am aware that my ISP does not specifically support V92, however it worked normally before the motherboard was replaced.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks for your time

Since you replaced the hard drive, have you loaded the most current driver for the modem? You could probably find it on the modem or computer manufacturer's website, if you haven't done so.

The modem driver is installed and it is the most recent one.

    Thanks for the idea :)

Did you by chance write down the settings you had for the modem before the hard drive replacement? Did you put them back in, if you had them?

Hmm, good question. I'm pretty sure that the settings are the same because the last time it worked, all I did was install it and I didn't change any settings.

I talked to my ISP's tech support and they said something about an itz string - and then they gave up and said I had some funky unheard of modem. I don't know if this means anything or not, but I just thought I would mention it.

    Thanks again

Maybe they were talking about modem init strings. I tried looking for your model's, and I couldn't find any except the generic strings. You can find a lot of modem information at www.modemhelp.org

If you go into Device Manager then right click on the modem's properties, in one of the tabs, there should be a pull-down menu for Maximum Port Speed with numbers ranging from 300 to a huge number. Right now, I'm set at 115200 and I usually get about 52Kbps. I've seen the 115200 as the recommended value several places.

I'm starting to run out of ideas... If anyone else has thoughts, chime in!

The port speed is set at 115200 in case anyone comes up with any more ideas. I just want to thank you so much for all your help! I'll take a look at that website and try to make some sense out of it, thanks again.

I've been giving these suggestions based on the idea that the computer is plugged into the same phone as it was before the hard drive/mobo replacement. If the phone line or jack has changed it could be a case of bad wiring..

    or

The motherboard doesn't like having the modem go at 52 Kbps for some reason..

Anyone else have ideas on getting Yeesha back up to full speed on 56K? We need all the speed we can get on dialup!

    Oh, and you're welcome. :) :D

Your assumption was correct, everything is plugged into the exact same things as they were before.

I went to the website that cat5e recommended, and after 3 minutes of total confusion I did what it said, and unfortunately nothing happened.

I'm starting to think my computer just doesn't like me... If anyone has any more ideas, that would be awesome.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!
