Modem cooling mod

There has been a lot of ambit u10c018 modems floating around that have terrible heat issues. Some getting so hot as to melt soft plastic near them. :eek Mine started to randomly drop internet and wouldn't re-sync till it had cooled down. This simply will not do. So out comes the screw drivers and soldering iron. :-D I put heat sinks on everything that got hot and added a little chipset fan.

Results:

Temps down from 85c to 45c
Random de-sync cured completely

Burst download before: 21Mbs
Sustained download before: 13Mbs

Burst download after: 33Mbs
Sustained download after: 19Mbs

 

Well done to you. Sounds like you may be able to go into business fixing these for people.

I would, but I doubt it would make any difference at all. Aside from parity, ECC or whatever they use to control errors due to overheating speed is entirely controlled by the ISP.

Its running on ~6v so its barely spinning. Just enough to keep air flowing. When I get the time Im going to mod the case with a fan hole and put it all back together.
