I have a Compaq Presario S4020WM desktop with xp pro and a Lucent Win modem. I am experiencing issues with the dial-up modem. What will happen is that I will connect to my ISP and then after any unknown amount of time all of a sudden connectivity is lost.
The only way I know this is that I will be surfing and all of a sudden I get the “this page cannot be displayed” message. The strange part is that the two computers icon in the bottom right part of the screen still shows connected. There is no error message coming up saying that it’s been disconnected. I have tried a couple different ISP’S and get the same result. I have ran 4 different spyware programs and deleted spyware and it still happens. I have ran virus scans and no change. I have checked the phone lines and nothing is wrong with them. I have downloaded updated drivers also with no change. What is going on??? Any help is very much appreciated.

Do you have Call Waiting? Your internet connection can become scrambled by the little beep that announces another call. You can set up Windows XP to disable call waiting...see the front of your phonebook for the sequence to dial (*70, 70#, etc..)...the setting is under the Dialing Rules Tab of your modem. When the modem disconnects from the internet, call waiting should automatically return to the phone line.

check you have the latest drivers for it still, that's a common problem with modems. Or, you could try a friend's external modem and see if the problem persists.

I have exactly the same symptoms, and have tracked it down to a problem with SP2 limiting the number of connections in a protocol file (tcpip.sys).

If you have installed SP2 and the problem has only just started, then it's more than likely the culprit.

    I don't have service pack 2 installed.
I have tried an external modem and it works fine.
I have downloaded the lastest drivers as well and nothing has changed.

ok so if you've tried an external modem and it works fine then there must be a problem with your internal modem somewhere, with connectors and or the hardware. have you tried uninstalling the hardware and installing again? also, did the internal modem come with any software as well as the hardware? if so try installing that.

Hi, I also have that exact model Compaq and have had the same issue with it for way too long. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with service pack 2 installed directly off of the cd in which you can order for free on Microsoft's website. I had literally restored the computer over 20 times and had ran anti spyware programs, did just about everything I could think of and it was still messing up online. I had never seen anything like it with being online and it working fine, then out of the blue it would say this page cannot be displayed and would stop going to websites or cut you off if you were chatting with someone through instant messaging. It would basicly force you to have to restart the computer and then come back online for a little bit until it did it again. I had talked to techs over the phone so many times and they'd always say it must be spyware or the browser settings or whatever but none of the stuff they recommended ever really took care of the problem. Well, finally this week I had took a new modem out of it's box finally that I had got at Walmart which is a Broadxent V.92 PCI Fax Modem that I've had for sometime but hadn't ever tried until now. I took the factory Lucent Win modem out and put the new modem in it's exact place and installed the software. I can now finally say that the problem is resolved. I'm about to throw the Lucent Win Modem into the trash since it's basicly useless and had caused us and I'm sure many other people this exact same problem but am thinking maybe I should contact them or Compaq to see what the deal is with them putting in these modems that have been a pain to us all and they had never even put a recall out in which I think should have been or even still should be done. I assume though that Compaq may not even be aware of the resolution of this issue and how big the issue really is with these modems that has caused grief and headaches to so many people and techs alike. I'm sure that even some people probably paid to try and get theirs figured out that had or even still have this issue. I'm so glad to finally have this problem out of the way. I can now finally stay online all day and night if I wanted and not have any problems come up like we were experiencing. So, if anyone out there is having this issue try to get your factory modem taken out and a new modem installed properly and you should finally be able to be online without that rediculous issue. Not long ago I was browsing online to try and find the resolution so I'm sure many others are too and if you're reading my message I hope that it's valuable to you and that it puts your computer problem to rest too.
