I have a modem that used to work, then when I reformatted, and reinstalled everything, it stopped working. Every time I try to connect, it starts to dial (no sound comes from the card), and then it says failed to connect to remote computer. I have reinstalled the driver several times, I have removed the old network card I had in there. I even bought a new modem to see if it would work, and it gave me the same error. It seems like the driver is corrupt. I check the modem properties, and it says that they cannot be displayed bcs the driver may be corrupt. I am running windows 98 SE.

    1. Be sure that the phone line you're using is functional. Hook up a phone to the phone line and see if you get a dial tone.

    2. Be sure you're using the correct drivers. Use Everest to correctly identify the make and model of your modem, and then find and download the Win98se drivers from the manufacturer.

    3. Move the modem to a different PCI slot. It is possible that the current slot is damaged somehow.

    4. Go into your BIOS and disable both onboard serial ports (unless you're using one of them).

    5. Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager and delete/uninstall the modem from the list of devices. If more than one device is listed, delete/uninstall all of them. Reboot the system, and allow Windows to detect and reinstall the devices.

I have tried everything you suggested, and it is still not working, when I try to connect, based on the driver I have, it will either tell me it is not installed properly, or that it cannot connect to the remote computer.

With most modems there is a timeout function which is short be default. I can't remember exactly where in the settings it is located but try and find it and increase the time. I had the same problem as you describe and this is what cured it for me

Thanks, I think it is actually something with the driver, because I have been able to get another modem I bought to work, I just needed to update the driver for that one. I am going to try posting this in the drivers forum.
