Rats!! Thought I was through asking for help for a while! Ah, well - - cest la vie! Am preparing my old computer to be given to my son. Did the format/reinstall gambit. All went fine until, in the process of putting in all the software, I noticed that win 98 wasn't finding the modem. (this will be a dial-up machine). I tried shutting down and removing the card/rebooting - replacing card/rebooting. No change. When windows searches for modem, it only looks in Com Port 1. Also, Device Manager only shows Com 1. Have tried moving the card to different slot, but that changed nothing. This same modem was being used before the reinstall. Hope someone can help. The computer is a Gateway 450. Modem is US Robotics 5610B (yes, I have the CD and upgraded driver).
Don't know what I'd do without this forum. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions. I haven't had any messages about new hardware. It's well seated. Attempting to install from "Add/Remove" is negative; - - I'm only given the option for uninstall. Checked the device manager, per your suggestion. There's a question mark at "Other Devices". Under that, another "?" at "PCI Serial Controller". Right-clicking on it, (Ser. Controller), brings up a window with "Device Status", where I'm informed: "drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). To reinstall, click 'reinstall driver'". When I do that, I get "Windows is unable to locate a driver for this device". Additionally, I can install the US Robotics Control Center, but when it's opened to install the drivers, it's "unable to detect a supported US Robotics product on your system". So, where do I go from here?

Boy, you're fast! Thanks. No, what it shows in add/remove is the Control Center, not the modem itself.

Matter of fact, I have the original modem that came with the machine. Will try that and get back to you tomorrow. Tried to install it (USR modem) through the control panel/modem route with no success.

Make sure that your (ALL) of your audio options works,

Try going into Device management. remove all audio drivers ( by right clicking and choose remove) and then install the modem drivers from device managment. Then, refresh it and let it find the drivers for the rest of the audio. Your sound (audio) is part of your modem.

Well, I reinstalled the original modem (a Conexent) this morning. It's recognized and been assigned to Com 2. Windows also loaded it's drivers with no problem. But I'm still wondering why it won't recognize the US Robotics. Haven't tried the removal/refresh of audio drivers. Will do that next. Thanks, guys!

No need to remove sound driver you should go into:

    first
    http://www.driverguide.com/
    username : temp
    pass : 512

choosing search-> win9x only then put modem model, P/N or the main IC chip parameter You will see results after that download and set up

    Second
choosing Google.com webside type infomation of your modem card "USrobotic....... driver download" ->search. You will see many results there and come on......

SgtRon, has the software on a cd. The drivers are not needed here.

Yes, the audio is not going in and to get the drivers in and working they need to be installed through device managment under (driver) and find that file on the cd to install. Then refresh and it will put everything in, then reatart the system.

SgtRon try going to Gateway and getting all available updated drivers for you particular system. This includeds updating the system board also. In the Add/Remove hardware wizard you are given an option to select the hardware you are adding. Choose modem and then select have disk and use your cdrom for driver installation.

I realise this , thats where the modem is under (other devices and that ? mark). It needs the drivers. So it "is" saying that there is something there but it needs the drivers. Install them at that other devices. Not add/remove devices.

When it tells you it can't find the drivers from (update driver) in (other devices and that ? mark) You need to go into your cd-rom drive where you put in the modem software and find the folder that has the drivers in on your software cd, you said you have for that modem. Simple...

To install driver you have 2 ways, installing from file *.ini for update or install new, and other one is run file Setup.exe and Install.com.
