    Hi all! :)

Here's my info: Windows ME, Outpost Firewall, AOL is my dial-up ISP and I have an internal modem and an external modem AOL provided me some years ago. problem. I was online Thursday nite and got an AOL error message that something was blocking my modem. I was almost finished and didn't bother to try to get back online. Another relative used it later and never could get sign on to AOL. I have been back and forth with AOL since Friday. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the AOL software 3 or 4 times. Now I can't even get the access numbers to finish setting up AOL!!! I disabled the firewall to no avail. I am going to try removing the firewall and then trying to finish the AOL set up. AOL did say that 5 of the 7 access numbers had a problem, so maybe ALL of them are having problems. Is anyone else having problems with AOL? Any advice regarding modems, AOL, Outpost? I'm at the library, but will check back ASAP. Thank you in advance. :)

Did your relative by any chance use your admin account? Always create a limited account for all visitors and family members, unless they have the tech know-how to fix problems & patience.

I suggest you create a new admin account, uninstall firewall & aol, reinstall ONLY aol, try it out. Remember to restart pc.

I now believe it's a problem with AOL because I installed Juno and all is working fine, no problems connecting! Guess I might have to fire AOL . . .

AOL put in a problem report and allegedly it has to be a problem with MY computer because they haven't gotten any complaints from other customers in my area re: the access numbers. The tech said that it was probably a problem with a Windows ME file. So, I guess I'm just going to have to change ISP's and be done with it. A whole week of my life wasted on this - so frustrating!!! :(

BTW, my antivirus program (AVG) picked up JS/Downloader.Agent while I was online Tuesday and then when I ran the check today it was on again. I'm wondering if a virus changed or deleted some files on my computer???

Microsoft doesn't update Windows ME anymore, right? TIA

I don't think there are new updates for pre-XP. If you mean you can't update ME in I.E., there may be a problem with your config.

If you suspect you're infected with malware, go to malware forum.

Just to clarify, windows 2K is still receiving security updates so that is the only pre-XP OS that is on extended support. I finally downloaded Tuesday's updates after I hecked to see how to fix the no internet if you patched and are using Zone Alarm as your firewall. I hate surprises so I always wait a few days until the dust settles before I patch.

Meekiecheese , I repaired a 98SE computer last week that is running AOL and lost internet connection. Go here
    Code:
    http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html
download the winsock fix specifically for 98, 98SE and ME.
NOTE: it must be run from the desktop, it can not be run from a floppy. (I have a copy stored on a floppy). That just might fix your connection woes. It fixed the computer I was cleaning. So he now has dialup access again.

I think you should install XP and get done with it
as was said, there are no updates for older windows :) no updates no security
another option (not so good) is to contact AOL support and c what they have in mind
