Modem port is not working

I have a Sony Vaio Model PCG7R2L. The large USB port where I put my Pantech PX-500 broadband card has stopped working. I think its the computer and not the card, but I have no idea how to troubleshoot the port. I tried reinstalling the software and that did nothing. I worked with Sprint and they were helpless(surprise!). Is there any scanner or troubleshooter that can tell me if something is wrong, or could you guys help?

 

Is this port on the back or the front of the case?

Are there any other USB ports you could try?

 

No. Is there any kind of port scanner/diagnostic program out there?

Wish I had a camera with me. I can't really tell by the picture, but I think its bigger. It's called a Type II PC Card slot.Its on the right hand side. I just found the reference. Its an old laptop.
