modem problem can i get some help please

ok heres the thing i have this Toshiba Satellite Pro 440CDT laptop it has a bulit in internel modem and its all setup right but when i try to dial out i get a no-dial tone error the phone line is in it right still i get that error i'm running windows 98se with all the standard drivers thats on the windows98 disk i was looking thro the online users guide for this model and its saying some about a Multimedia Connect software that came with the laptop does anyone know what that might be and where i might download it if you need anymore info just say so and i will post it on here i hope someone would be able to help me

 

In the control panel, select the modem icon, and check the properties of the Internal modem. One of the options is to wait for a dial-tone. Deselect this option and try again.

If that does not work, add the following initialisation string for the modem.
ATX3.

 

that did not work that was the first thing i tried
can you tell me how to add the ATX3 string and heres the log for that modem when i tryed to dial out

i added that string and still nothing but this time after it dialed i picked up the phone and there was a dial tone so the modem is not even picking up the recever so to say. is there a way to test the rj-11 jack on this laptop and the hardware itself

 

anyone? i used hyperterm and it said it was working fine but when i try to connect to the internet it dials but if i pick up the phone right after it dials the number theres a dial tone on the phone so the modem is not taking the recever off the hook so to speek does this mean that maybe that modem was hit by lighting or something
because in this computer that i'm on the old modem was hit by lighting and it would not dial after that it would take it off the hook but not dial

 

what i would suggest is to try your modem on a friends PC, that way you can determine if it is the modem or possibly some kind hardware fault on the laptop from that previous lightening strike. Also try a different modem on your pc.

 

that old modem of mine went into the trash that was hit by lighting and thats my desktop not the laptop so forget about it i'm just worried about fixing the one in the laptop

ok about the one in the laptop i cant put the laptop modem in a differnt one because its a internel modem bulit into the laptop
