modem problem

a little problem with a modem. When it is connecting it will say "connected" then "verifying user name and password", then "failed to connect to remote modem" Have tried several dialup services, same thing. dialed a phone number using dialer, it worked. even have tried swapping out modems. same problem. using windows 98se.
Any suggestions?

 

Have you tried changing the dial up properties and set the number to which it needs to dial.

what programs are you using to get rid of spyware?(there are plenty of tuts in the spyware board) It may have caused damage to your system even though it's not there anymore

i have tried several isp's. USA Datanet, netzero and even tried to connect to microsofts recommended isps through the wizard. Got the same response from all of them

 

Is there any conflicts in the device manager.

 

no conflict, but I found an unknown device. turned out to be dialup adapter. not quite sure how that happened, but now problem solved.
