i have a dell deminsion 4600 intel 4 processor @3.0Hz with HT technology, 512DDRSDRAM @ 4ooHZ with an 80 gig HD running windows XP. i have comcast broadband, but am now on my fourth modem in 2 years. they get to a point that they have to be "recycled" several times a day, then comcast replaces them. i have a smallish RCA modem. Comcast gave a friend of mine a 3COM and she has had it for over a year and has never had to recycle hers and never has any problem. Is there something wrong with my computer that i keep having this problem and maybe it is not comcast?

eh ? recycled? you put it in between " " but you dont explain what you say. You probably have faulty/outdated/breaking down coaxil cable throughout your house/neighborhood, modems are not gonna help you.

I agree with Omegamerc. Sounds like you got line problems. I have the same RCA modem via Comcast, and mine works sweet! Have you had them come out and check the line?
Something else that you didn't mention. Are you using a router? When you have the problem, have you tried just recycling the router, instead of the modem? I have a netgear router and I was having to recycle it about every other day. I upgraded the firmware, and whamo! Problem went away. A few months later, Netgear came out with a later firmware, so I upgraded. Started having problems again, so I backed down (yep, the ol if it aint broke, don't fix it!). Try removing the router and see if you have the same problem. Just another thought.

i do have a router, and next time i will try just recycling the router. by recycling, i have to unplug the power from the modem, then unplug the router, wait about 3 minutes, then plug in the modem, let it recycle (it lights up all the lights, then one at a time, then in the proper order), then plug in the router. i have had the router for about 6 months. i have the same one at my office and have no problems at all. the other thing you mentioned, is about the wiring. comcast ran the wiring across my roof since the wire comes in on the other side of my ranch house and they didn't want to dig up the entire yard. but every time they come out and test, they tell me the signal is very strong. But my laptop is always telling my the signal strenth is excellent, then it might say it is very good, sometimes poor - so maybe it is the wire.

If you have a wireless router, then no, that's a totally different signal than we are talking about. What brand of router?

Yes, that's the norm when you have to reboot the router/modem. But try it without shutting the modem down. Just the router. See if works. If it does, then you got a problem with your router. Check and see if there is a later firmware for your router.
