how do i get this cursed thing OFF?!

my google defaulted back to this following a cookie flush; but my "search preferences" only gives me a choice of "on" or "off".

well, i definitely want "off" -- and it seems to be in agreement that i've selected that -- but then when i go back to a search, i get "Moderate Safe Search is On".

i tried changing it to "on" to see what would happen -- the results change to "STRICT Safe Search is On" -- but then when i toggle it back to "off", it's right back to "Moderate Safe Search is On".

is that it? is the concept of "off" gone?!

    :confused

Did you install "K9 Web Protection" on your pc? What browser are you using? Does this happen when searching Google Images?

yeah, google. in ANY browser (IE9 but double checked in FF and Opera).

using yahoo/bing as a workaround atm coz that still has the 3-choice "off/moderate/safe" setting visible. which is evading me on google.

Please take a little more time and make your replies less cryptic.

Go here and scroll down to "Disable the SafeSearch filter".

    less cryptic?

i want to turn off "safe search" from google. it offers me "on"/"off" but the "off" is actually "moderate", not "off" at all. surprise surprise.

in the past i believe the choices were "off/moderate/safe" such as i am seeing in yahoo. or there was a SLIDER to that effect.

and yes, that is the FAQ for it. what it fails to tell you is that IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!

(unless you're cryptically hinting to me that i have a COOKIE problem?)

Cookies are not problems - did you do the below?

CatT I can't follow the rules

yes, again, checking that box yields STRICT safesearch, unchecking that box yields MODERATE safesearch.

    nothing yields OFF.

    Hi

If after a re-boot as Dr M suggested it still doesn't work, then try booting into Safe Mode with Networking and see if any of the browsers you have still have this issue or cannot in your google settings cannot be changed as per the supplied KB article and saved.

Then what did you use to "flush" your cookies, the apps name is great?
What security applications do you have installed, please name all?
Do you have any browser toolbars installed, if so what?
If Firefox us commonly used then what addons do you have installed?

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Good morning...

Google no longer allows the complete disabling of its SafeSearch feature in the United States as illustrated here. Sorry.

cheers for the info Caliban, it seems that the google pages or options I get in the UK are different.

Maybe a wise chance to swap search engines to Bing as a fav of mine over google or my work fav as its a clusting search engine Clusty

Clustering searches allow you to narrow down your search parameters a lot, much more tailored results to google (unless you use search strings)

of COURSE they're censoring the results. if you search on "jaimee foxworth" and didn't even know that she DID porn, how would you know to "affix" a term like porn in the FIRST place?!

do i need to affix "porn" to all searches just to be sure now? as in "nancy pelosi...porn" on the off-chance i'm going to miss a scandal? i dare say i might have missed the ANTHONY WEINER one, had google been doing this back then.

i am not looking for porn myself, but if big brother is going to distort the results IN ANY WAY, that is censorship.

google has crossed into monopoly status. if they're gonna pull carp like this, i want them OUT of the m/w dictionary!

and again, why are WE being subjected to this, when the likes of SINGAPORE and SWEDEN are not?!

lol...Yes. If you want to know if someone made a porn video, you would have to say 'did nancy pelosi do porn?' Why on earth should someone looking for Nancy Pelosi for reasons other than that want to see pictures of naked people? The idea of seeing Nancy Pelosi, herself, naked is just too horrible an idea to even think of.

Even if you don't agree with it and think its censorship (which is your prerogative, obviously), the fact remains that google did not take it away, you just have to make your search specific. I can't imagine why that would be a problem with anyone, but you clearly aren't the only one since I saw a number of people with issues with it out there when I found that article. I have a feeling there will be more people than not who appreciate it, though. The way images were set up where that stuff popped up on unrelated searches isn't even an accurate search...and doesn't align with a normal web search.

How are they distorting anything? :confused Its actually more accurate now. I used an example in your other thread...My daughter did a search on kittens. I would imagine I don't have to tell you what she wound up with. That is not an accurate search. Simply searching images for kitten should not pull up women with their legs spread.

No clue...maybe they are doing it gradually.

Anyway, I'm not going to debate this any further because the simple fact is, you can find porn if you are actually looking for it using google's image search. That was the only reason I posted the link in here since there was misinformation.

my husband thinks nancy pelosi is hot and he rarely looks at anything over 17.

she'll have ONE customer when her video comes out!

Google search has been censoring it's content for ages. They've been removing search results based on MPAA etc. requests, China's Google (among other countries) is heavily censored, etc. This concept with them is NOTHING new. It's just one more censorship.

I do think it would be nice to be able to search for images without having adult content show up, but I don't think it should be a setting you should have to change every time... I think a simple tic-mark box on the search page would be sufficient.

Anyway, I do love the power of the Google search engine... I've never liked Bing much. Duckduckgo.com is a decent alternative, and there are plenty of other search engines out there.

I think America's going to get more censored as time goes on, with the internet, and in general. I'm guessing Europe doesn't apply to this feature, because Europe by and large doesn't censor nudity in general... it's a more natural/normal part of their culture.

i thought google pulled OUT of china specifically to protest this.

EVERY time?! how about ANY time!

changing the DEFAULT or AUTOMATIC settings is mildly annoying. removing the option WHOLESALE is catastrophic.

it is the latter than i'm protesting.

...as well as the DOUBLESPEAK of labelling moderate safesearch "unfiltered".

if they called your two choices "heavily filtered" and "filtered even more", okay, i could live with that. but the former is actually listed as "do not filter"!!

    i hope someone sues them.
