I am a fireman and the fire station bought a new computer for a training aid, I am looking for a program that will monitor where people are going and also block porn sites. Is there a free program i can use to do this

    Greetings, N84Christ...

Agreed with Goldenskull - it's almost impossible to block everything you might consider bad. However, there are a couple of steps you could take to help:

    1. You can filter somewhat by setting up a dedicated account for general usage and allowing only limited rights to that user group.

    2. Only allow one browser on the machine, if possible: Internet Explorer. I know - I'll probably catch some flack for saying that, but any Parental Controls that you might set up within Windows are geared for IE and Microsoft generates needed security updates for IE, not other browsers. Most 3rd-party monitoring software is also tailored for Internet Explorer - you might not like it (and I don't like it - I'm a Firefox user), but that's the way it is.

    3. Navigate to Control Panel > Internet Options > Content. Enable the Content Advisor - from there you will be able to set up restrictions, create passwords, approve sites, etc.

There are monitoring programs available as well as forensics software that would enable you to see your users' browsing histories - for example, our local schools use Novell, which is very good but expensive. Also, I'm sure there will be other suggestions from members here.

I would suggest using restricted accounts, as Caliban suggested, one to each user. Let them know that all internet activity is monitored and logged on a per user basis. A sign or startup page that says something to that effect.

Remind them not to share passwords or accounts, that they are responsible for all activity that occurs on their account. Remind them of department policy and the consequences for violations.

You'd be surprised at how much responsible behaviour this sign will inspire...
