Recently my monitor would start blinking on and off[note not switch off, just go black](The light on the monitor would go on and off as the monitor flashes] and not stop, whilst its doing this i would still be able to move the cursor and interact with the desktop however everything would be stuck, Happens mostly when i`m watching videos (youtube videos, regular .avi`s etc..)

    What could be the problem?
    I havent changed anything recently.

  2. A little confused - have a few questions.

So the monitor keeps it's power but drops between a "no signal" and a "signal" state while trying to play videos etc?

Have you tried changing the VGA lead?

Is it onboard graphics or stand alone graphics card?

    How old is the machine?

    How old is the monitor?

What was the last thing you done when this started occuring?

do you have another machine you can try the monitor on to rule out it being your machine?

Do you have another monitor you can try on your machine?

    Thanks :)

Hopfully in answering these questions we can get a better understanding with what is happening and with abit of luck be able to solve your issue :)

silly me, i forgot to incl the details.

monitor is QUITE old, not sure exactly, its a samtron 75e and riddled with dead pixels

    The tower + components are around 4yrs old (7900gtx, EE6600, mobo => gigabyte ga-965p-ds3)
(gpu appears to be dead, its been for a while, i know this because whenever i play games PC gets stuck bla bla bla... a story for another thread)

So the monitor keeps it's power but drops between a "no signal" and a "signal" state while trying to play videos etc?
yes, but not ONLY when i play vids, happened once when i was playing a facebook game. It doesnt happen EVERYTIME i play a video.
I`m able to slightly interact with the desktop, but it starts warping, windows of various programs only partially show so i just get a mess of things on the screen. I still continue to hear the sound of the video perfectly.

Have you tried changing the VGA lead?
Not sure what that is, the thing that connects tower to monitor? if so, i will change it.

What was the last thing you done when this started occuring?
    Watching videos

do you have another machine you can try the monitor on to rule out it being your machine?
No, the only other machine i have is not suitable (take my word for it)

Do you have another monitor you can try on your machine?
    yes, i will try it

  4. yes the VGA lead is the one that connects the tower to the monitor :)

It could actually be RAM aswell, have you tried taking all your RAM out except one stick and see what happens? and keep doing this till all the sticks have been indiviudally tested? :)

It may be a dodgy graphics card kealing over underload.

Do you have onboard graphics at all? If so you could try removing the graphics card and trying the onboard and seeing if it happens?

    Good luck.

If you have a laptop around, you can try the screen by connecting to the rear vga connection.....................

  6. (Not always on the rear) :)

Anything you can test the screen on would be good, what size is it? You said it is cluttered with dead pixels even if it is the machine rather than the monitor would you not consider getting a new monitor?

I had a monitor first loose one of the colors. I think it was the magenta and then it did the flash thing for awhile and now is a large paper weight. Hopefully you have not lost a color that indicates monitor hardware failure.

  9. Don't forget to test the ram. I had some pretty strange visual problems when one of my ram moduals was faulty.

i changed the monitor + cable... still happens.
Will have to do a bit of research as i`m not really sure/confident with fiddling around with hardware.....but its most likely my GRFX card

  11. well it's very simple :)

BUT, the port on your graphics card you plug the lead into do you have one further near all the USB ports etc? This will mean your motherboard has onboard graphics.

You might be able to disable it in the bios which means you can just plug your VGA lead into the motherboards onboard, and this will rule out the graphics cards.
