Monitor issue

Good morning. Yesterday I had to re boot my machine and the monitor went into "sleep mode" on the

boot. I am assuming that it was sleep mode because the power button was blue for a second then

turned to amber. I thought perhaps the connector from monitor to computer was dislodged or loose

but it appeared tight. I rebooted several times and the monitor powers up (button turns blue from

amber) but the screen remains black . I have checked the monitor power settings and everything is

set to "never", hibernate is "off" also. I hooked another monitor to the machine and all went well, so I

am pretty sure it is a monitor issue. The reason I am concerned is the monitor is only three years old.

My machine is a HP SR1630NX, the monitor is a HP LCD f1905. The OS is Windows XP SP2. Any

help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago, I don't know if the cure is the same but I found that the 20/24 pin power plug on the mobo was slightly loose, wiggled it and it was fixed.
So first, check that and let us know what happens.

Don't know why it does what it does but that worked for me.

Its sounds like what you performed there was an inadvertent cmos reset which would reset the bios to default settings,in a live computer black screen situation the usual fix is to reset the cmos,it could be any number of settings that causes the computer to black screen before bios and they usually have nothing to do with the monitor output even less so when the computer will work with another monitor.

Check the monitor on another computer and work from there,I suspect the monitor is faulty also so rule it out by testing it on another computer.

Thats a damn fine idea lol dunnoa why I didn't think of that.

Although when I wiggled the power lead, the puter was powered OFF and it didn't cmos, I thought of that so went to check my setting in bios were still the same as they were, I think it was simply fluctuating power due to the plug being loose. If you think about it, you could have enough power to power up but a slight millisecond drop out would cause a false boot.

But yeah, try it on a different monitor, good thinking Rikky.

I tried the monitor on another machine and the same issue happened. Could it be the cable that runs from computer to monitor. Not the power cord, but the 12 pin cable male on both ends.

What happens when you press the OSD button, is the menu coming up?

I am assuming that OSD means On Screen Display, is that correct?. When I press the "on" button, nothing happens, the screen remains black

It's possible, did you try checking the main board power connector?

Try a different cable, I guess it's also possible you VGA is dead, is it onboard graphics?

All due respect Nedlamar its not the mainboard connector the computer works fine with another monitor also the VGA can't be dead as it the computer works fine with a second monitor,I think we have established beyond all reasonable doubt its a problem with the monitor.

The only thing you can do at this point is try a different cable or consult the manual or online manual of your exact brand of monitor to see if something crops up but in all likely hood the monitor is a goner,I have seen a few monitors with an auto set function that you can hold for a few seconds to reset or re detect default configuration.

My apologies, I read that completely wrong, I read "I tried another monitor and the same thing happend" lol

Edit: Just another thought, most monitors when unplugged from the VGA will display a type of logo screen saver, do you even get that?

When the VGA is disconnected, the logo (screen saver) does not appear. With the VGA connected, the computer when booting, will power up the monitor blue on light) and put monitor in sleep (yellow power light) mode when the machine is turned off. There is a very fast small flash visable behind the black screen when these actions take place like the monitor is trying to function. If there was a way into the monitor, I would check the VGA connector, but I see no way in.

Yeah Rikky is most likely right then, sounds like the monitor itself has problems, did you try a different vga cable?

Aslo, what make and model of monitor is it?
