Evening people (if you're from the UK)

I have built up a new PC and currently have the computer hooked up to a VGA monitor via DVI to VGA adapter, but the problem is the display is not centered. It is centered in terms of left and right centering but there is an inch off the top which means I can't see the taskbar at the bottom.

I am running Windows7 with a Samsung SyncMaster 920NW monitor.

To check, I had connected the monitor to my laptop and enabled monitor output - the display was perfectly fine when connected to the laptop.

Monitor resolution is 1440 x 900 and refresh rate seems to default to 75MHz.

I can't understand why it's doing this? (monitor has been auto adjusted and manually adjusted to within an inch of its life but no luck).

Resolution is not compatible with the monitor. Manufacturer & model helps.

tgell, driver would be the next. Most monitors are not going to behave properly at 75hz, so setting at default would be the next best thing. As for their problem of cutting off, if settings on the computer have been messed with, it can cause it, also if they go into the monitor settings and reset it, it should go back to factory settings.

Card is a MSi GTX560 Ti running the latest drivers. I have tried desktop adjustment in the nVIDIA control panel but that forces the recycle bin to be cut off at the top of the display.

Compare the Display settings between the laptop and the other machine.

75MHz refresh rate is High for an LCD.
CRT's are more likely to be best at 72MHz to 85MHz.
60MHz is generally correct for an LCD. Check the monitor's manual if you have it.

The output resolution from the laptop was 1024 x 768 and I think the refresh rate was 60MHz. Using the nVIDIA control panel I tried changing the refresh rate but it always defaulted back to 75MHz, and I think this is perhaps where the problem lies.

I will bypass the nVIDIA driver settings and change it via the link you gave me. I'll report back at around 15:30 GMT.

    UPDATE:

It seems the problem isn't just with the monitor I'm using, as I've plugged the HD TV into the PC and the same problem is happening. However this time instead of the display not filling the screen it is now overfilling the screen, to the left and right.

Perhaps a complete wipe would be a start? I'll check the card for seating problems.

If using a hdset, that would be due to the settings on the hd, not the computer. Wiping is not going to solve anything with the monitor being the issue. Make sure that the HD is set for Full, and if you have to, do a reset on the monitor.

Connected the PC to the HDTV using VGA and HDMI and both display correctly in 1920X1080 mode. Now connecting to my small TV in room to check the screen again.

Do you have the actual Samsung monitor driver installed? Does the monitor show as the Samsung 920nw in Device Manager?

If you are using both monitors at the same time, a lot can do with how you have them set up. If they are set as extended, you can get what you are seeing. If mirrored, they should both be the same.

I am using only the one monitor (one in the picture). If you look closely at the screen also I can see sort of a 3D effect, like shaddowing on all the pixels, but it is most apparent when you look at icons.

    The monitor driver is installed.

And that's what it looks like so far after pressing the Auto button about a thousand times. I had to go into the nVIDIA control panel to move the desktop up so I could see the taskbar, but notice how the top is cut off (black area).

If you hit Windows key and P are you set for Computer Only?

I really don't know what is going on. Just throwing things out there. In Nvidia contol does using resize allow you to move things into the frame?

No it does not, it just allows me to move the desktop display itself and not the entire display. I only had that function you had a screenshot of when it was connected to the HDTV.

UPDATE 2: Just connected a 1024x1024 monitor from the PC downstairs and it displays a picture just fine.

GET IN!! Wooooooooooooo!! Finally cracked it after 3 long hours of fiddling, I went into "Screen Resolution" - "Advanced Settings" - "List All Modes" and changed it to 1440 - 900 256 colors 60 hertz, then changed back to 1440 x 900 True Color (32bit) 60 Hertz and it now fills the whole screen.
