    Hi guys,

A friend of mine's having problems with his custom-built computer. During an Internet session, his computer crashed and on a restart, he got "NO SIGNAL DC/1 DCC/2" (or something similar) on his monitor. A second restart fixed this, but the problem persisted the day after, after the computer crashed completely.

He gave the computer to a specialist who claims that he fixed it, but immediately as soon as the computer was returned, the problem re-appeared (leading me to think it was perhaps an issue with the power supply, though we're unsure how to confirm this). After the cables had all been unplugged, put back in and the system had been rebooted several times over, the error finally abated and the system worked fine for one session, allowing him to use everything normally. However, the following day, after several restarts to deal with the 'no signal' error, which was apparently still present, a different error appeared. The Microsoft Boot file, ntoskrnl.exe, had now become corrupt and Windows has not started since.

Every time he tried to turn it on, the same thing happens. For the first few attempts, either the monitor displays 'no signal', as detailed above, or, on the offchance that the monitor does work, the corrupt file stops Windows loading. After those few attempts, the problem with the monitor appears to become less prevalent and the corrupt file error is the only one that occurs - however, this occurs every time the computer is started - i.e., we have not been able to successfully start the computer since.

I am aware of the procedure required to fix the corrupt file, though my friend does not have a copy of the operating system (Windows XP) installation disc. I think that the issue with the monitor is completely separate to the issue of the corrupt file, but I'm not entirely sure - can anyone clarify if there can be a link between the two?

In summary, what could be the cause of the no signal error (cables appear to be secured in correctly and he uses a screw-fastened parallel port to connect the monitor cable to the base unit), what can fix this, and is the issue of the corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file relevant to the monitor problem? (also, is it possible to repair this without a copy of the installation disc).

The monitor is made by Logix, the base unit was custom-built and the system is running Windows XP Professional. I'll provide any other specifications that you guys deem relevant. :)

    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

Thanks for the swift reply. The specialist he took it to made sure that the graphics card wasn't at fault and even tried a different graphics card, to no avail.
