    Hi,
I reciently installed GPU drivers for my inspiron 8500. The installation went fine and everything installed as it should but when i restarted my laptop the monitor does not work. I get the dell logo and the windows logo at startup but after that nothing. I have sound and the OS is running in the background but no display.

Upon closer inspection the drivers i installed were not designed for my GPU(Geforce 4 4200 go). That was the mistake but i dont understand why i was allowed install them.

I have the original drivers for my laptop on a cd how can i install them without being able to see whats going on.

    Any help would be appreciated.

If you can get into safe mode, then go to device manager, select the display adapter, and select properties, then use the roll back drivers button.

Also, as you now know. For laptops only use the drivers from the manufactuer, check if they have any updates. You do pose a good question as to why they would release drivers they aren't compatible for mobile vga cards, i've asked the same thing, nvidia does this also, makes little sense. Safe mode should set you free as theefool instructed

the problem got alot worse but i got it partially fixed. I have the computer running but loads of things are not working.

I had planned on doing a full format anyway so now is as good a time as any.

All my program exe's are backed up on a USB harddrive.

There is only one game that i do not have the disks for, Call of Duty and United Offensive.
I loaned them to a friend about a month ago and i wont be seeing him for about another month and i play these games everyday.

Is it possible to copy the game to the USB harddrive including all registry settings and then move it back once the format is complete. Are there any programs that can accomplish this task.

    Thanks for your help.

I've pulled program files right out of the programs folder and put them into my own programs folder and ran them without a problem, you'll need to create your own shortcuts, you'll also may need to tweak your settings again.
