monitor not powering on

i have an old hp cpu and from time to time when i power on my cpu it doesn't power on the monitor but cpu powers up.after a couple of attempts the monitor finally comes on after powering the cpu.any suggestions on what the problem might be?

How old is this monitor is it an lcd or crt monitor.

maybe u just need a new monitor mate thats wat i would do buy a new one

monitor is three years old,but comes on with new computer

The graphics card could be loose. That would make the monitor not turn on. Try pushing it into the motherboard firmly, or dusting it if its old. If its loose, it could work sometimes but not others...

If monitor comes on with a new PC then you are half way their to diagnosing the problem as its not with the monitor ( so no need to buy new one ) I would definatly be doing what Jawa Slayer said above and as well as pushing it in firmly I would also firstly remove it and clean the contacts both on mobo and card then firmly push back in and make sure the monitor connector is also firmly screwed into back of the card.

yeah or u could try making sure that the connection from the monitor is pushed in and screwed in properly cos iv made thet mistake befor i didnt screw it in and soetimes its makes loads of different colours and i fawt my monitor was wank3d
