Hey guys, hope all is well. Came home from college and my family's comp. is having a prob.

When I boot up the computer, the monitor does not respond to tower at all. The monitor stays in its "sleep" mode. The only reason why I have posted this in "software" is because I have tried booting it up from several (5) different monitors I have around the house, and failed every time. So I do not believe it is a monitor issue.

I would like to boot it up and work with it through safe mode, but I can not get a picture at all to show up. Also, im not sure if it's related, but the fan in the tower is abnormally loud. I'm kinda lost guys help me out.

I've done some research and maybe it's a video card issue? I'm not sure.

    Comp. Specs

    Compaq Presario SR2030NX
    AMD Athlon 64
    Processor 3800
    1024MB Memory
    200GB Hard Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE
    Windows XP

    Thanks Guys ;)

Does it sound like the computer is actually loading the OS? Are you getting any activity on the hard drive light on the front panel.

Now that you mention it...no! It doesn't sound like the OS is loading at all, and the hard drive light isn't blinking at all. All you can hear is the abnormally loud fan. Not good I assume. Any ideas? Thanks.

It couldn't hurt to look in the case and see if the fan is dirty.

Do you have any bootable CDs around? You could try booting from an installation CD to see if you get anything on screen.

If neither of those gives you anything on the screen, I would go ahead and unplug the PC and remove the small quarter-coin shaped battery from the motherboard for a minute and then put it back and plug in and see if you get a Compaq splash screen.

Well we couldn't find an installation disk, but I did take open the case and clean the fans. Both were a bit dusty. Also removed the battery from the motherboard, and placed it back in after a bit. Still not functioning correctly. I'm not sure what else to do....Thanks

Anything else that would be worth my time trying to do? I've kinda hit a dead end. Any response would be appreciated. Thanks. ;)

I'm trying to think of what to try next. Resetting the CMOS should have given you a Compaq screen.

That PC has onboard graphics. If you had a separate video card you could add that and see if you get a signal.

Maybe, try unplugging the hard drive and CDROM then booting to see if they might be halting POST.

Or, removing all RAM modules and see if you get a beep error. I'm not sure Compaq boards have beep codes but I think no RAM installed should give you some sort of error if the motherboard is still functional.

Hey Sach thanks again for the help. I appoligize for not getting back to you sooner, but i got busy w/ the holiday season. btw I now know I should have posted this in Hardware.

But after playing with it with my uncle, we came to the conclusion that the motherboard is no longer functional. We tried a couple different video cards, nothing. Unplugged the hard drive and CDROM, nothing. We even tried different brand new hard drives that I had around, nothing. Also removed the RAM modules and got no beep codes. Not sure what the device is called, but my uncle hooked up the computer's power supply to this device and found that the power supply was bad. We tried a new power supply and nothing happened.

Any other ideas out there? I feel that the only others steps would to rip it apart and try a new motherboard. Even with a new motherboard I feel there's a risk that something else might be bad. Parents aren't about to throw $$$ around to try and fix this comp., so I think they may get a new one.

At the current moment we've got out dinosaur IBM w/ Windows 2000.
Any other comments would be great. Thanks again!! ;)

Sorry, nothing worked for you. It sounds like you tried everything possible. No error when booting without RAM and swapping power supplies were really the last two things to try.

It's probable whatever damaged the power supply damaged the motherboard as well. I can't think of anything else it could be that would be an easy fix.

IBM as a brand name sort of signals dinosaur--I hope it is bearable--most likely good enough for the internet. :)

    Hi JakeD

Do you have a spare Graphics card to test as last time I had that error was on a Dell in work and the graphics card was faulty.
