Monitor picture braking up

My son's PC monitor, a Compac TFT 1500 lately has been exhibiting very unstable graphics, the display vibrates and breaks up and the icons lettering displays so bad you can hardly read it.

I took out the video card and reseated it and this solved the problem for a week. I was running spybot on his PC today and it started to do it again so I took the Graphics card out again and replaced but no help.

Then I switched the memory around and no help. Finally I replaced his video card with mine and no help. I have his card in my PC as I am typing this and it works fine.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem? Most frustrating. Could the culprit be the monitor? Guess I'll have to hook his up to my PC to eliminate or pinpoint that as the problem. Guess I'll go do that now. Short of that, anyone have some other ideas to figure out what the problem is?

    Thanks, Bo Bo Bolinski :p

Monitor it is! I set up his COMPAQ tft5000 on my desktop and same problem. Anybody know if these things can be repaired or if it is worth it? They are definately not cheap! This one cost $300 a few years ago.

I'll just buy a 17" used monitor for like 50 bucks, and that should solve your problem....old 17" monitors shouldn't cost no more than 60 bucks if they are used....

Actually used TFT monitors are not $60. If you get a line on one, let me know. Even on EBAY bidding on a used tft usually costs at least $150.

I've read a few articles on problems with compaq tft5000 monitors and the common problem listed is with the power supply. Anybody know if this problem can be verified and if so how to replace. A lot cheaper alternative to replacing the monitor I think.

The company in Hayward, CA that I took the COMPAQ TFT5000 fixed it in one day for $75. They said they replaced the mainboard. Here's their e-mail in case anyone in the area needs their service or has questions re Monitors. Actually CRT's are so cheap these days I wouldn't bother repairing one, only a TFT.
