Hey guys, it's been an awful long time since I showed my face on any of these boards, certainly is nice to see that everything is still going smoothly though :)

I'm having a slight problem regarding an old monitor my friend owns and wondered if anyone here could shine a light as to why this problem could be occurring.

Her monitor is a 17" LCD and is a few years old but works most of the time without any issues at all. However, the problem happens whenever she unplugs the monitor from the mains power. Every time the monitor is unplugged it refuses to turn on again for some time once it's been plugged in again, sometimes even a few days. This happens even if the monitor is not turned on or being used when it's unplugged. We've tried plugging it into the wall by itself and even tried a different location and neither have made any difference.

If anyone could give even a slight insight as to why this might be happening, or even better a potential fix then I would be most grateful.

It's nice to be back again,
    Jack.

Have you tried a different power cord? Might be suspect.

    Hello,
When the monitor is plugged in and the computer booted, can you see a very dim image? If so, then the backlight on the lcd monitor is failing.

Nope, monitor works flawlessly any other time

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

If the backlight is okay, then this could be an inverter and/or power supply problem (the display supply, not the computer PSU). If so, then it might be cost inefficient to try to repair, considering the age of the unit.

Silly question: why are you unplugging the monitor? I can count on one hand the number of times I've unplugged my monitor in the past year.

Yeah, I had a feeling that it would have been a fault with the power supply. Just thought I'd check to see if maybe it was something blindingly obvious I had missed first.

Honestly, I've no idea how/why it get's unplugged, mine is always plugged in at home. Apparently she does it by accident most of the time when plugging and unplugging other things.

Thanks for you help guys, I guess it is time for a new monitor then!

If she does this while the monitor is on, maybe that could cause some sort of protection to trip - like if the power goes off during an electrical storm while everything is on.
If she does it by tripping over the cord, perhaps the connector on the back of the monitor has suffered some damage.

She could always try a sign on the plug... something like: DO NOT UNPLUG. A bit of paper and some sticky tape might come out a tad cheaper than a new monitor. ;)
