hey guys i really need your help.

    I have a hp f1205 monitor.
my computer is a Compaq Presario sr1630nx.

The problem is my monitor today all of a sudden loads the computer and then switches to this blank screen. The monitor is still powered on but its all black. I turn on and off the monitor again and I get about 1 sec of the background and then it goes black.

I'm not sure if its my computer or the monitor. I tried system restoring but that didnt work. anyone got any suggestions?

Edit: AWWW CRAP. i shined my lamp on the monitor and I can see the screen vaguely. Is this something I can fix?

i can see the usual. the loading of windows.... it loads fine. It's just that now i need to turn the monitor on and off constantly to get a quick glimps of my computer and then it turns black. It took me almost 3 minutes to slowly move my mouse to system restore and click it.

This is terrible I do not want to go out and buy a new monitor there must be a way.

Have you tried the brightness and contrast controls in the monitors menu? Check and be sure cable is tight on both ends, Maybe its just wore out. ed

Is that one of the old crt monitors? [ looks like a tv]?

Sounds like the backlight is shot, now it could just be the light it's self or the light and the inverter. Both can be repaired depending on you skill level and there are shops that specialize in LCD Monitor repairs. A link on self repair and not the best I might add, but it will give you a idea http://www.inventgeek.com/Projects/BacklightFix/Overview.aspx

Personally I would start with process of elimination.

Try another monitor first (if you can borrow one)
or try your monitor on another computer
to make sure it is indeed the monitor that is the problem.

Sounds like the monitor, but it pays to make sure before spending your hard-earned money.

    Good luck :wave

Used a new monitor = works

the old monitor to another pc = same problem.

It is strange to me that its a backlight problem because every time i turn it on and off (repeatedly) it looks perfectly fine for about 2 secs.

how much do you think this is going to cost if i take it in to a shop

No way of knowing until the problem is found, the way electronics are, probally more than its worth. ed
