    Hi there,
Ive got a 17in Compaq FS740 CRT monitor running at 1152x864x32. I got it in Nov 01, so its about 3 years old, but I take good care of it (i.e. keep it clean, dont pour drinks down into it, etc), but in the past few days, Ive noticed that if I leave it on for more than about 2 hours, the screen, as a whole, gets progressively darker. If I shut it off for a bit, and then turn it back on, its fine again for a while. Also, the other day, after working on my stupid senior thesis for about 8 hours, it shut off completely, but the light next to the monitor power button was still green. I ended up shutting if off, then left it alone for an hour, and when I turned it back on, it was fine. I can still raise up the brightness on the monitors manual options, but that just quickens how long before it starts getting darker. Any ideas or am I now in the market for a new monitor? Thanks for your help.

ps. how odd is it that my brother, IROC_DIS, is also having monitor problems...

You've probably already done this, but are all the ventilation holes clear of dust? What happens if you point an electrical fan at the back of the monitor to add more cooling air. Only a temporary fix, I guess. Baz

I think Bazza has the right idea.

You have what is called a thermal intermittent problem. There is a component, transistor likely, that is getting leaky when it gets hot. So, if you can keep it cool, it will work. Otherwise you will have to find the problem.
