Monitor restarts on it's own

Hey, good day all. Well, I'm new here and I hope it's the right place for this post. My Monitor restarts on its own and I have no idea why. The PC itself is 3 years old and runs on OS Windows XP...but since I've gotten it, this has been a problem. (Only in the monitor restarts, not the Processor)...Is it that my monitor is overheating? I try not to turn off my computer often. I just put it in 'standby mode' when it's not in use. Can someone please help me or at least make a suggestion as to what's wrong?

    :confused

Explain what happens when your monitor restarts. I'm not at all certain what you see when it restarts since I've never had this happen.

Well, Windows XP starts to load all over again and it just starts up from there, like regular booting up. The CPU doesn't restart though (it just keeps running). But the monitor is the culprit that just shuts off on me and in the same blink of an eye, restarts again.

Well, I don't have close access to another computer to try what you suggested wareup, but as soon as I do, I'll let you know how it goes. Might be a stupid question, but...where is the video card located?

From what I have read here its not your monitor thats restarting and a cpu does not restart, its just on or its not. What you describe is your Operating System restarts which means your whole PC is shutting down and restarting again. This is usually caused by overheating and the over heating that causes it most often is the CPU (processor). Typically though when a PC overheats it will not want to start again right away, it would need a cool off period in most cases so as mentioned above a video card over heat could also be the source of your problem.

What you need to do is to try and monitor your temperatures and see whats getting hot, or (although I suspect your not too familiar with the inside of a pc) you will need to clean out the fins under the fan of your CPU/heatsink combination or in the case of the video if it is a card, its fins. Although clogged fins can cause the problem a stopped or slow fan can also be the cause.

For the cleaning of the fins, try buying some canned air and sliding the little red hose that comes with it onto the end of the sprayer. Turn your PC off and unplug it and open the side door, then try and place the can of air (keeping it as upright as possible) in a position where you can turn the red hose just enough to blow sideways thru the heatsink fins that will be under the CPU fan. In the case of a removable video card, although you can blow at it while its installed, removing it makes it much easier, just be aware that newer cards have a locking mecanism at the back of the card near the motherboard. Usually to unlock a card there will be a lever to press but if your unsure just try cleaning with it still in the box. Onboard video has no fan to clean but there could be heatsinks and fans on the mobo's chipsets.

After words if your heatsinks were real dusty, you'll have junk all over the inside of the case, and will need to do a little Top down cleaning to try and get it out (start at the Powersupply and blow thru its fan and work your way down and finally blow out the bottom at a steep side angle in short bursts always trying to keep the can upright or it will spray freezing liquid.

I'll try what you say. If I can't do it myself, I'll call a technician...
