Help! Read other posts about monitor shutting down. I have an old Netvista A40 Desktop. Type 6840MGU. It has onboard display adapter and no other adapter (unlike some of the other Netvistas). Tried different monitors and 3 different video cards. Seem to remember reading once about someone having to change something in Bios or something, not sure to get new card to work. No other card is recognized except the onboard adapter and that one shuts down monitor about every 10 minutes. Computer is still running. Can hear drive spinning etc, but, no signal to monitor. Not sure what to do. All help appreciated. THANKS MUCH!!!!

Not familiar with Netvista but give this a go.

Go into the device manager & uninstall your video adapter. (make sure you have the motherboard CD to reinstall the driver if necessary.)

Reboot into the bios. Look for the option to turn off the onboard video. Shutdown the computer & install the new card.

Boot up & load the driver for the card.

Sorry for the delay getting back. Tried Hipster Doofus' suggestion with 3 different cards, 2 different monitors, new drivers, etc. No matter which card or monitor is attached, the monitor still shuts off randomly, and the computer is still running. Must press power button to restart and everything looks fine until the next shutdown. Tried the monitors on different computer, no problem. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! Need more suggestions. This is mother-in-law's computer. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!!

I don't know if you're still looking into this. I was working on a similar machine for a friend. Every time an operating system is installed (Win98, w2k, xp), the OS installs fine, but then on boot, the system hangs when it tries to go into 32bit mode. With win98, you actually see 16bit stuff happen and video load enough to get the background color. With w2k or XP, you don't get past the progress bar on the bottom of the screen.

I decided to do a little digging around today and ran across several references to the problem being bad capacitors on the motherboard. Some people even provide a list of the cpacitors, for those who like to cut and solder replacements.

So, look around your motherboard and see if any of the capacitors is bulging or leaking some sort of fluid, and you'll have an answer. If you don't see any obvious signs, you may still have to test each, in case they are bad but not showing it.
