The problem is not the monitor its the video card.

Well, My system is a Amd 64 bit 3200+ , 1024mb 3200pc sdram , Ga-K8nnxp Gigabyte mother board, 40 gb western digital Harddrive, a JGE 450x Power supply--

The Video Card is A Gigabyte Nvidia 6600GT (AGP). Yes it is plugged into the power and has work flawllessly for the last year.It is seated correctly, the cord is attached.

    Here's what happened:

Last night I played a lil WoW, shutdown. Went to sleep. Awoke this mourning and computer boots fine, recognizes everything goes into windows start-up screen..

I hear the familar windows opening chime. but my monitor turns off..as if the setting of resolution is too high. So I try a different monitor, same thing happens, perfect boot, monitor shuts off.

Turn off start in VGA mode, starts fine. Try to up to 800x600...nope monitor shut's off. ???

Restart- VGA-Mode- Uninstall all Nvidia display drivers...Restart..normal mode- boots fine, can increase to very high resolutions at 16bit or 32 bit. At this point its not recognizing the 6600gt.. Does this mean it is running off built in graphics card?

Go to Gigabyte's website, get current drivers and install-reboot normal mode----Monitor shuts OFF! can hear windows boot fine.

Anytime the drivers are installed, both 2 versions I have tried and I boot to VGA mode it works fine until I try to go above 640X480.

------------REFORMAT Windows Only Drive+Install Fresh Xp Pro-------------

Lather rinse repeat all above steps after fresh install and same effect.

Other than that everything runs fine, network, sound, monitor, ram everything, just not the video card above 640X480 with the drivers installed.

PLEASE! Anysuggestions? Is this a bad card? I hav another to try but Im sure it will work, its 2 am and Im too tired to Try tonight. But even if it does, that wont tell me if its a driver freakout, or overnight my videocard went bad? That would really suck I dont have the money to replace it, any diagnostic idea's besides switching cards?

TBH, you have done all the first steps, next would be as you say to try another card to narrow down.. is it the card or motherboard at fault.

Ok this is weird, I put in my old video card, and the same problem occurs to the T.. is it a Bios problem, should I reset CMOS?

No but how do I check that? I mean, cause I can set up the resolution as long as there are no video card drivers installed at all. then is seems to work fine. BUt even with my old video card, as soon as it was installed adn went above 640x480 the monitor shut off. But without drivers installed it goes past 1024X768 fine.

It couldnt hurt to reset CMOS, but then check to make sure if their is onboard GFX that its disabled.

what drivers are you using and from where?

I would be tempted if you havnt already to use Nvidia's Reference drivers http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3294
