monitor switching off

Hi i have afriends pc the problem is that the monitor switchs off just after start up either on the windows logo screen or if i go in to bios as soon as bios appears , the monitors green light stays on and if i turn it off and then turn it back on i can see the screen for about a second then it turns off . So far i have tried a agp card ( the output i am using is from onboard graphics ) and ive changed the ram around . If any one has any ideas d be very grateful for the help cheers .

 

When the monitor shuts off momentarily (during boot), it is usually trying to synchronize with the graphics settings. Try just turning the monitor on and resetting it to factory defaults and maybe do the same for the PC bios as well. However, it could always just be hardware that has gone south...

 

Hi ucanfixit cheers for the quick reply id tried the computer on 2 different tft monitors after reading you reply i tried it on an old crt that i have stored away and it works perfectly so i assume its a resolution issue or some thing similar hopefully i can fix it ( its the pc in the link below so i assume it should work at a decent resolution ) if not i know the guy im looking at it for has a crt anyway .Cheers for the help xenex

So the old crt works and the newer one doesn't... Other than resetting the newer monitor to factory defaults, I can' t think of anything else other than the monitor must be defective because the factory defaults are usually set to work with most basic PCs. I think mine defaults to 800 x 600 @ 60Hz for example.

 

what cable is it connected to the computer to
mine is fine on normal but when connected by hvi or hdmi or whatever they call it when vista logo comes up monitor dies and if i switch pc on without switching monitor on first then i have to start in safe mode and delete drivers on video card and the reinstall just to get it working
