i installed it, then failed to boot up. It stalled and stopped then said there was a problem with boot up procedure and "recommended" me to let it carry out a diagnosis. I wanted to go to restore point but obviously couldn't. Anyway, it showed me a windows 2000 style box and chugged away for ages saying it was diagnosing and fixing. So long I think that stalled too. So I rebooted it again and it was fine but is now prompting me to download this update again.

if the windows update causes you boot problems do a system restore and download and install the windows update manually and see if it works then.

There really is no need to be caught in a dilemma like this, as Win 7 has a built in time machine which enables you to take an image of your system at any time - ideally just before you hit the button on a system update - and if things then go pear shaped you can revert to the state it was previously in. You will find it in Backup and Restore > Create a system image and you do need an external drive or a partition with plenty of unused space to store the image file. Most W7 users don't even know about it and even fewer use it. Sad.

do you mean system restore just before I update it ? Or something else ?

For info...I don't have these updates set to automatic, I like to see what they are first - although I always update them once I've looked at the content.

thats what was happening to me. Thanks for that. I don't use Sophos though, however at the moment I am using the premium version of malwarebytes on trial along with my usual MSE.

How do you register with this site using a username ?

OK. The Win 7 backup process I am talking about is not the same thing as System Restore as it restores your computer in its entirety to the state it was in when the image was created whereas System Restore just restores the registry and some files. You should at least create a system restore point before running this update again. Depending on how seriously the update screws up your system it at least would give you the possibility of backing out of it.

We have 4 Windows 7 computers in the house. I've never done the "big bundles" that MS issues.

I did 2 updates for April on Wednesday: kb4493448 Security only at 37.4MB and
KB4493435 IE 11 Cumulative Security update at 52.8MB

I saved myself headaches and 154.2MB of useless junk that MS pushed in the big bundles.

None of the four computers has a problem.

thanks mate, I've placed this update in "hidden" and don't intend to download it again, but I'll do what you say as well.

I don't have any of these, where do you find them and are they are they replacements for all the more regular security updates ?

You go to the MS catalog. They won't be offered through Windows update.

I go here monthly to see what I need.
    https://www.ghacks.net/2019/04/09/microsoft-windows-security-updates-april-2019-overview/

Note: Some problems are arising with April's patches. If you run Sophos, AntiVir, Avast and possibly AVG (owned by Avast). Since I don't have any of those programs installed, I didn't have a problem.
I run MS Security Essentials as my av and Malwarebytes Pro for everything else.

My download of yesterdays roll up update was cancelled. I'm not going to attempt it again. How do you select, from the above link, what you need and what you don't ?

NEVER try and do an update on the day it is released!!!
I can't stress that enough. I wait until Thursday and start reading about the numerous problems with the update.
I wait at least a week and sometime even 3 weeks to install the monthly Security only updates.

The link I posted is for April. It changes every month. This is the current one
    https://www.ghacks.net/2019/05/14/microsoft-windows-security-updates-may-2019-overview/
Scroll down until you see this: Windows 7 Service Pack 1

If you do security only, you'd grab
    KB4499175 -- Security-only update
and then you'd also get the IE Cumulative Update under Other security updates

Depending on what versions of NET are installed, you go for some of those also.

thats the sort of advice I wanted to confirm my own thoughts now. Thanks mate.

Well, this month I did not follow the above advice. After going to Woody Leonhard's site and seeing there was an update for XP (yup, 5 years after support ended) and learning Win 7 has a major vulnerability, I spent the day imaging our 4 Windows 7 computers.
    https://www.askwoody.com/2019/ms-defcon-3-get-windows-xp-win7-and-associated-servers-patched/

I'm on the update for the 4th computer. No problem with the first three I did.
    I installed 4499175 (Security only)
    4498206 (IE Cumulative Security update)
4495612 Security update for NET 3.5.1 hich comes with Windows 7.

If you have Avast, I think there are still problems. You might not want to patch right now.

So. Once a month install the security only update, in this case KB4499175 from Windows 7 SP 1.

Then look at the versions of NET. How do I know which ones I have to select ?

Do this, and ignore the actual Microsoft auto updates (which I have never had on auto anyway). ?

This is only increasing my likeliehood of putting linux onto my PC to be honest, when I have the time etc.

If you select the security only updates, you will also have to install the Cumulative Security update for IE 11.
    This month it is 4498206.

You should know exactly what version of .NET is on the computer.
All our Win 7 computers have NET 3.5.1 because Windows 7 comes with NET 3.5 and that has been updated.

One of my computers also came with NET 4.5 so on that one only, I have to update 34.5.2.

Look over you update history and you should be able to determine what NET updates were installed before October 2016. That's when MS started bundling.

    Yes.

I'm not sure you'll like linux either. Personally, I don't find it all that user friendly for updating. I have to run a package manger, determine what repositories to look at then comb through and see what I want.

so for June I would install KB4503269 -- Security-only Update from the ghacks.net link

and KB4503259 -- Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer: June 11, 2019 also from the ghacks.net link

If you want to keep your system updated (not everyone does) then run Windows update and install all important updates that are offered. Personally I always image my systems in the week leading up to update Tuesday. That way, should any of the updates cause problems, it is simple and quick to uninstall the lot. Some members here do take a selective approach by waiting to see what updates are being reported as problematic and avoiding installing them but that approach requires both patience and time.

STOP There are a few updates you do not want. I haven't installed them and don't intend to.
avoid 4507456 July's Security only - it contains telemetry
avoid 4516033 September's Security only update - it contains telemetry
avoid any IE cumulative update until October; everything that was missed will get installed in this one because it is cumulative.

Do install: 4512486 August's Security only (doesn't contain telemetry)
4516655 re-release of Servicing Stack update. This has been released almost monthly but September's update affects Windows 7; the other month's do not.

I always did that, always, until I had the problem I reported earlier mate, it has seriously made me hesitate continue doing it.

Anyway, I'm just about to upgrade my router with BT and go unlimited from having a cap. So from now I have a few months to decide whether to upgrade to windows 10 (including downloading it and updating it regularly with a hard disk of 500gb) or change to linux.

Or get a new desktop loaded up with windows 10.

  32. NE5

    NE5 Private E-2

what do you mean by telemetry ?

  33. NE5

    NE5 Private E-2

in the microsoft update catalog, which version of these updates to I need, is it Windows embedded Standard 7, Windows 7, or something else ?

Sorry for the multiple posts.....but I've just summarised all of this advice and highlighted which updates to download, and I've also read what telemetry means.

I think - unless you lads think it is the wrong thing to do - that for now I'll sit on this with a view to upgrading, I don't want to ruin the ability to upgrade to windows 10 if I give it a try.

I do bank online though, so as a compromise I could download the security patches only as outlined by plodr, and I get that I also select the Windows 7 and NOT the embedded from the catalog.

This advice is greatly appreciated thanks to everybody.

Don't do anything with the October patches. There are still bugs like start menu stops working and printers stop working. My advice in post # 30 which I posted at the end of September has one change. Don't install IE's cumulative Security update.

I hope you don't use IE as your browser.

I looked over what is offered for October here
    https://www.ghacks.net/2019/10/08/microsoft-windows-security-updates-october-2019-overview/

There are three: (I only examine security not all the others)
    4516655 SSU (servicing stack update)
    4520003 Security only
    4519974 Cumulative IE

I just installed the SSU update on our four Win 7 computers. No reboot needed.
I'm holding off on the other two because a) I want to see if telemetry is included in 4520003 and I want to see if 4519974 causes any strange issues. I usually wait about 10 - 14 days until all the bug reports are in. Since IE is not my default browser, it isn't critical that I patch it immediately.

You might want to install just the SSU patch for now. It actually came out on Sept. 30th but I didn't see it until I looked at October's Patch Tuesday offerings. I don't install any patches offered in week one (beta) and weeks three and four (can usually be considered beta too).
