ok, so my 2Ghz AMD athlon 64 3200+ processor is o/c'd to 2.45Ghz, which is the highest i can overclock, otherwise my computer won't boot.

but i've heard people say things like "well, i got my processor to such and such Ghz on air, but on watercooling i can get it to a much higher Ghz."

so, does temprature make a very large difference in overclocking? i know that if you overclock too much your computer overheats and can kill itself, but does it check the processor temp at boot or something? because i would like to overclock my processor more (probably to around 2.6Ghz, maybe even 2.8), right now the temps are only around 30 C idle and 40-45 C load. i don't really want to watercool, though, so would buying a better hsf (i'm still using the stock one that came w/ the processor) allow me to overclock more?

this might not help but what i have just read it has nothing to do with temp. you can run it past 2.65Ghz if u go buy an external hard drive it can be done because i have done it to mine. is your sound card built in or not???

Better cooling is always good when overclocking. To get a higher overclock, you may need more vcore, causing more heat. A lot of mobos have an alarm/shutdown feature when the CPU gets to a certain temperature.

Your computer may or may not overclock more than it is now. Don't let the magic smoke out! :cool

my vcore is already set at max, either 2.45 or 2.5v

If that were true you wouldn't have a chip, or a motherboard for that matter. Both would be dead.

Socket 939? 90nm? What core, Venice?

Socket AM2, core Orleans, i'm pretty sure that it's 90nm

Cooling it more then it already is wont help much, if at all. (unless your hitting subzero temps). If your at max voltage try running a little under 1.45 if your running 1.5, 1.4 if your running 1.45 etc... Some times the CPU voltage regulators cant take full voltage cleanly. Also see if you have a startup VID setting in the bios, some times the CPU needs a little extra startup voltage (about +0.1v normaly) to boot. try Other then that your probably at your max core overclock.
