More RAM more CPU usage

Will adding RAM increase your CPU usage. I added 512 mbs and my usual 1 to 3 percent CPU usage jumped to as high as 7 percent. This is when no other proceeses are running and the PC is "idling".

It should not be. Could be that you may have to adjust some settings for the Page file. Also, is this usage related to System Idle Process? Try and use Winternals "Process Explorer", which can be downloaded from here at MG, and use it to narrow down the memory use.

When I added 512 mbs of RAM I noticed that the CPU usage was higher even when I wasn't runnning apps. I thought that more RAM meant that The CPU had more to do. I don't think this has anything to do with "system idle process".

Are you suggesting that more RAM means a bigger the page file which increases the amount of CPU usage?

No, it may be unrelated as to what is driving the CPU useage up. Use Process Explorer and look at what is going on.

The only thing PE shows is System Idle Process at 99%. But this is supposed to be available processor power. Something called System comes on and off at 1 or 2 percent. Everthing else is 0.

System Idle Process just appeared in Task manager yesterday. I never noticed it running before.

How can I find out exactly what is using the 3 to 6 percent of the CPU?

    Process Explorer, and Task Manager.

This means something, besides ram, is driving your cpu usage up.
If you had less ram than what your system needed to run, then you might see a change in your cpu usage.(i.e. system needs 512, and you only have 256)
The more ram you have, the less your cpu has to work to make up for the ram your lacking.(i.e. system needs 256, and you have 1024)
