More RAM

I had a spare slot. I took a RAM board (?) from my old PC and put it in the spare slot. I originally had 256MB and I still appear to have 256MB. Am I just thick, have I missed something or both?

We could help you out better if you posted some system specs. e.g. processor, ram, motherboard, and operating system (95, 98, me, 2000, XP) Or a make and model of the computer too!

There are many differnt kinds of memory out there and chances are the one from your old computer is not compatable with your new one. Most older computers run PC100/133 memory. Newer computers generally run PC2100 to PC3200. This will cause your system not to recognize the memory or your computer will simply not boot up.

The system is either PC 600 or PC800 HP Pavilion 750.UK, with Windows Xp (Home) and Pentium 4, 256 DDR-SDR RAM. The old system was PC133. I guess these are not compatible. Thanks for yor response .

 

I think this is your pc. If it is you need PC2100 memory. According to the charts you have 256MB installed now, and you have one more slot open. That slot will take any PC2100 memory up to 1Gig. Go here and follow the memory wizzard in the middle of the page. Once you know for sure what kind you need go to a place like www.newegg.com or www.Tigerdirect.com to get the best deals!

For normal operations another 256MB would be suficient. Windows XP actually reccomends that u have 512MB total, so you should see a performance increase with it too.
