What exactly is 4gb+ of ram needed for?

There is no game in the world that has a requirement of more than 1gb of ram.

Most application only need 512mb? So why does everyone up their computer to 8gb when nothing needs it?

HP has already started to put 6gb of ram into their computers...Is it just there to raise the price?

Or to make you feel good that you almost maxed your memory?

No. Your motherboard has 2 memory slots that support a max of 2gb per slot. 2 x 2gb =4gb.

As to the question of "why would anyone install 8gb of RAM?". Well, while it may be true that there aren't too many games (or any) that require that much memory, just think how much better EVERYTHING would run if you had twice the "required" or "recommended" amount of memory; and if you had 4 times the amount "required" or "recommended". It's all about performance. Just because Game-X says it needs 1gb to run, doesn't mean you should stop there. Think back about 5 years when 1gb of RAM was HUGE. Now 2gb is average. Personally, I run 3gb, mainly because I'm still using a 32bit Windows which is limited to just over 3gb of RAM. As soon as I go to Windows 7 (the 64bit version naturally) I'll be installing at least 8gb of RAM, maybe even the 16gb max my board will support.

To raise the prices? Not likely. 1gb of DDR2 is under $10 at wholesale prices, under $15 at Newegg... this does NOT mean that a 2gb stick is $20... a 2gb stick is about $11 wholesale, maybe $17 at Newegg (or less, I didn't check)

I expect it's also something to do with quad channel memory, coming soon to a ridiculously overpriced motherboad near you :-D

Not to mention that both XP and Vista grab lots of memory. So you've got to take that into account as well as what the game is running.

    Hi All,

Don't forget that more mem is required if you are running two or more apps/progs at the same time. Any program must be loaded into REAL Memory to run.

I wouldn't get more than 4GB as I have a dual channel Mobo & I don't want any less than 1GB per stick or any more on a stick for that matter :-D

Your choice of RAM setup is key too, for example I have X2 1GB Kingston Hyper X DDR2 1066MHz, upon installing it, it was running @ 800MHz. After adjusting the voltage & timings a bit I got 1066MHz :hyper

Also it depends how well your ram is used by the programs, so run better in Ganged & others Un-Ganged, maily Vista & some other I heard use Un-Ganged ( I don't know that much about it though :-D)
