More Win 10 problems

First I updated my Thinkpad E335 but wasn't able to update two Lenovo system utilities I want retain. Turned out that the E335 is one of the systems Lenovo isn't supporting for Win 10 so I had to roll back to 8.1. Then I updated my Win 7 PC but every time I access it from Teamviewer, which is a lot, it changes the screen res and makes a complete mess of the desktop. Then found that our attached Officejet was no longer accessible over the LAN either.

It's disappointing as I like to keep our systems up to date 10 but as I cannot resolve any of these issues it seems it's not for us, not until the next purchase anyway.

    Hi B

Yeah its a PITA that some older PCs and Laptops can update OK to Win10 and some not due to hardware issues, I have a 2009 ACER laptop that's fine with Win10 and actually works really well with it, but I can see that other even newer laptops are not friendly with Win10 at all.

You can get many machines working but you have to take the time to search and try various drivers and that may or may not work, but time consuming.

    Hi David

I really wanted to have 10 on at least one of the systems here but without risking loss of functionality, so I partitioned the laptop's SSD and restored an image of it's original Win 7 system into the second partition (it has 8.1 in the first), and then upgraded 7 to 10. Apart from running into the same issue as before, which will prevent me from being able to update any of the Lenovo system utilities when in 10, it runs well enough though noticeably slower than 8.1. But at least I'll know what folk are talking about with 10 ;)

It was all a bit of a squeeze as the SSD is only 120GB, but I don't keep any of my personal stuff on it so each OS still has at least 20GB spare. Be interesting to see which of the two I'll end up preferring though I really like 8.1.

If Win 10 runs slower make sure Cortana is not active as that can slow some PC down, I have this issue with an old Samsung N110 Netbook of mine running Win10.

8.1 is good but I have really warmed to W10 and the new menu over Metro is good to be honest, the back end is not far off 8.1 anyways so most is cosmetic.

I'd overlooked Cortana - good tip. Thanks.

Well, it certainly wasn't Cortana slowing it down as it wasn't present in the Start menu or in services, and when I investigated I got the message that Cortana wasn't available in my region! What!!!??? 'scuse me but this is the UK we're talking about and that's total rubbish! rolleyes Anyway, a bit of digging and it turned out that there are several language, speech and regional settings that all have to be set correctly for Cortana to activate, and it seems if you upgrade to 10 rather than clean install there's a good chance they won't be set correctly.

Too early to tell whether Cortana has made it even slower but I'm seeing enough lags to make it look unlikely ten will survive long on this particular machine (Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E335).

I had some trouble with my W520, but it was upgraded from an existing W7 install. I had rolled back, but then W7 just didn't work right any more. SO, I bit the bullet and started over from scratch with a clean Digital River iso, upgraded to 10 (without A/V or any software installed), and then installed all my software.

It took time, but it runs like a top...

Yes, a clean install is the ideal way to do it. Trouble is I've no more Office licenses and I don't want to have to buy it again. You didn't need to start from scratch with Win 7. I understand that you once you have upgraded a qualifying system you can reinstall with the Media Creation Tool and your system will be activated automatically.

Erring on the side of caution in case I needed a rollback, I took the "long way home", so to speak. Also, I needed to know if it was the ThinkPad which had issues, or the upgrade from the previous install. The one thing I can say I don't like about the UEFI and W8/10 is that the startup repair will invite itself to adjust your BIOS settings. Let's just say that the OS altering the BIOS made me less than happy.

I have also made a policy of temporarily disabling or even uninstalling A/V software with W10 upgrades, just in case.
