I have a different post since I contacted a motel and got new information.

They have wireless free with an Ethernet jack in reach room.

Would it help to run an Ethernet cable from their Ethernet jack to my router then another Ethernet cable from the router to my laptop?

Is there much involved if it is a good idea or is it straight forward?

    Thank you

You should be fine going from their ethernet jack to your computer without the router. Or just connecting through the motel wireless. Why do you want to go through your router? do you have concerns about security?

Yes, my wife will be doing business.

Does the router help at all?

The motel said they are an unsecured network - regular Wi-Fi.

If the motel has a landing page, one where you have to log in, then a router might not work. But if your wife is working for a business they might have a VPN access for her, that make a secure tunnel for a 'workplace'. If you don't have a VPN you can set up SSH on some routers, which requires some knowledge of you router and install cygwin link or http://www.howtogeek.com/68061/setup-ssh-on-your-router-for-secure-web-access-from-anywhere/

I thought the Spring Hill Suites by Marriott would have a password at least. We are leaving the pc home and choosing another hotel next time.

A password to get on the wifi wont make your traffic realisticly any more secure, but instead causes problems for the motel as many dont have staff knowledgable to help customers get connected, or to even help someone type a password for wifi in the right spot. I dont know of any hotel in my town that has a password on there wifi.

yeah ive never seen a password on the wifi at hotels either, usually just a login page like foogoo mentioned. Some hotels contract phone support to help guests with problems connecting.

I am catching up as we just returned.

There was an Ethernet cable. Is that the same as Wi-Fi?

There was no pass key either, whether that makes a difference or not.
