I need a a good motherboard monitor to gauge temperature thats fairly easy to use not like MBM 5 can anybody help. Also my computer has restarted on it's own twice in the last two weeks, the machine is only 7 months old. The fan seems to be running although i have not opened it up yet. I free of virues malware/spyware can somebody help?

try Everest for the temp monitoring
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/EVEREST_Free_Edition_d4181.html

Were there any new drivers or software installed just prior to the first unexpected shutdown ?

Probably pay to look at the fans (hopefully you have more than one)
to see if they are working, covered in dust etc

Run everest and let us know what your normal running temps are

    ASUS MajorGeek

    Check out Next Sensor http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4988
It will also allow some temps in the System Tray :cool

    Why don't you like MBM?
It's not that hard to set up confused

Everest is simple & great :major

Speed fan, IMO Crap, I never did like it :p

Your system is restarting go to Control Panel/System/System Properties/Advanced/Start Up & Recovery, then uncheck Automatic Restart
Then when you get a Blue Screen, note & post the exact error message you receive

    Post all your System specs

Shanemail thanks i cannot remember if i installed any drivers or software prior to first shutdown, can you help please it just restarted again today, and i emphasize it does not shutdown only restarts. I have not tried everest yet. Thanks

Shanemail can you tell me what speedfan does before i go there?

Asus...MBM was to much setting up for me, i don't know what to say. However i already unchecked Automatic Restart, i got my first bluse screen today but all i copied was this "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" It did not list any driver by name, and i did not copy down any Stop 0xA message, sorry.

Speed fan measures & displays fan speeds
As i mentioned earlier, it conflicts with 'Intel Active Monitor' so I dont have it installed at the moment.

Everest runs well and has a lot of info, and is very user friendly.

If you can, try to copy down the full error message; as this should pinpoint if it is a driver causing the problem.
Could also be a Hardware problem

Also please post all of your system specs
    (listen to ASUS :) )

    Hi
I would try downloading Everest again
It has an easier interface than speedfan
you generally cannot use a download manager when downloading from this site.

When you first open speedfan there will be a list of temperatures
    running down one side.
let us all know what they are.

    Also....
Take the side cover off of your pc and check if the fans are running
    and check for dust etc

Take a look at the manufacturers sites for correct bios, drivers and utilities

If its not a temperature or software problem
then we will have to start looking at hardware

  13. Chala

    Chala Corporal

Temperatures range from a low of 35 to a high of 41. I already taken cover off, blew the dust out with compressed air, and both heatsink & case fans seem to be spinning like a charm. Now as far manufacturer sites do you mean just for the Bios, and the drivers for the bios, please explain further, thanks.

    Motherboard troubleshooting page
    http://www.msicomputer.com/support/sup_tshoot.asp

If you go to this page
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_liveupdate.php
you can download 'Live update 3'
which will take care of the motherboard software

    Graphics Card
    http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeon-prer300-xp.html

Check this out as well (If you havent already)

Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager
and check to see if any of the devices have a yellow balloon next to them containing an exclamation mark

While you are there you can choose to update other drivers
sound card, modem, hard drives etc

    good luck

Shanemail did you read the Hot CPU log, says memory is good what do you think?

As far as the motherboard Shane is is only 7 months old do i really need to update?

  18. shanemail

    shanemail Fold On

    Yep

not familiar with the program, but, all looks good. :cool

the easiest thing it can be is a driver issue
by downloading the latest drivers etc, your computer will run better
and at the very least you will be able to basically rule drivers out as the cause of the problem

could also be some software that you use rarely.
pay attention when it happens, to see if something appears to set it off.

After sorting out the drivers, the next step would be removing non essential hardware

    Graphics card
    modem etc

    using a different power supply

    this could take a while
you may want to consider taking it into a shop
if you have no experience removing/replacing hardware.
once they have it in front of them, it should take them no time at all.
    just a thought :)

    good luck :wave

Shanemail i also had an IT expert helping me he looked into my minidump files, he suspects it is my sound card. It appears the sound card i have (Sound Blaster Live Value) or at least it's driver is for Windows 95/98/2000 and NT not Windows XP. I tried to open the Creative Sound Mixer and guess what i got my BSOD screen with stop message. The message was as follows...

    Bad Pool Header

    Stop:0x00000019 (0x00000020,0x85662480,0x856624F0)

I plan on uninstalling all Creative files and taking out thend card and buying a new one compatible with Windows XP, hopfully that is the culprit, please get back to me, thanks.

    Hi Chala

    http://us.creative.com/support/down.../&hdAllProduct=1&LangID=1033&hdDspLangID=1033
will download an automatic driver updater for the sound card
just click on the "I Agree" button near the bottom of the page

your motherboard is meant to have on-board audio anyway
    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=pM8M-v&class=mb
so if you take the sound card out, there should be another set of audio plugs still on the rear of the computer.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------
I would still follow the steps below

If you go to this page
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...liveupdate.php
you can download 'Live update 3'
which will take care of the motherboard software
    including on-board graphics and audio

click on the "Download live update 3" button
    click save
click save again (make sure you know where the file is saved)
once it is downloaded, navigate to where you saved it
    double-click on "liveupdate.exe"
and follow the prompts to instal and run the program

the program will need to run online, it will automatically download
bios, drivers & any other software for the motherboard, onboard audio and onboard video

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
    Graphics Card
    http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/x...rer300-xp.html

click on the "catalyst software suite'' link
    click save
click save again (make sure you know where the file is saved)
once it is downloaded, navigate to where you saved it
    double-click on "6-11-pre-r300_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_38185.exe"
and follow the prompts to instal and run the program

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

    Good luck

So Shanemail, if i take sound card out the integrated card will work, i won't have to plug anything in or install anything will i?

  22. shanemail

    thats the theory

If you check on the back of the computer first
you should see a set of audio plugs up near the keyboard and mouse inputs
If they are there, you should have no problems.

Just out of curiosity, WHY? I am a big fan of this program. You can choose which temps you want displayed in the tray and it has always been accurate for me.

Everest is a great program. Also, as a side note, your mobo needs to be supported by MBM for it to work. I use Speedfan and have it run on startup with CPU temp displayed in tray. I use Everest for many different things and the temps it reports are the same as Speedfan.
