today i ordered from a comp shop a asus mb and intel p4 2.8ghz to replace my old one that the processor went bad in because the guy told me that i couldnt just swap out the processor for a better one because my current mb is a gateway and that they lock features from the factory. im sure i can do the install fine but what i wanted to know is when i swap out mb and proc is there anything else that needs to be done? or is it as simple as i just do the swap hook everything back up turn it on and it will load just as my old setup did? never had to deal with this so im not sure what to really look out for. any help appreciated thanks

You will need to reinstall windows.
You can try to boot with the old, but due to driver & chipset differances, usually out of luck.

Hopefully, you have full version windows CD, cause if you have a restore disk it aint going to work.

    Yep pretty much it.
Make sure everything is connected correctly, double check everything.
Make sure your boot order is set to CD before HDD.
It will recgonize you have previous instal of windows, which is normal, choose to format & install fresh, read this:

If ya have any problems, post um, I or other's will help!

I wounder one thing, how good your PSU is, Does it have enough juice, I'm thinking this Gateway probably had bare minimum PSU.

    Good Luck!

    Oh Ya, Welcome to MG!

i had already upgraded to a antec 350 w ps when my old one gave up a while ago. so will i lose everything i have on my hd now or no? also does it matter that my windows xp instal disc says version 1.0 to be used with a gateway pc?

    Good one on the PSU

If you reinstall windows or format, Yep, loose everything!
Sounds Like maybe you have a restore disk??

If your disk is full version, you can try repair install, that would save all your programs & stuff, ya only would have reinstall Microsoft updates!
Ive never tryed repair install after changing to different mobo, not sure how that would work out??

You can install the HDD with your stuff on it into another pc as slave drive and extract all your important stuff to cd or what ever.

You can try to boot with the OS ya have now, worst thing, ya wont be able too, try it and boot to safe mode, once ya do, if ya do, go to device manager & uninstall everything that is checked then reboot, then install drivers from your mobo cd?? IF the new MOBO has same chipset etc. ya might get Lucky.

It seems you are not getting power to the MB. Checking all connections is the first step, as you have done. A couple items come to mond. Is there a little green or red LED some where on the MB glowing? if there isn't, check to make sure the PSu is turned on; (yes I know it is too obvious). Check the manual and make sure the connection from the on/off switch is correct, as this would cause it to not start. If you still get no response try turning the PSU on and off several times. My Enermax resets in this way, but I don't know about the Antec. Is the extra 12 volt lead (4 pin) connected to the MB?
As far as reformatting, it is possible to change MB without reformatting, but is not a guaranteed success. I changed MB on my comp 9 months ago, going from a Soyo with Intel chipst to an Asus with ATI chipset, and have been using it ever since. If you try to do a repair it may not work, because repair will just check your settings and not make any changes. the way to do it is to remove allchipset drivers and onboard hardware drivers before hand (if possible), and then start a new install (tell it you want to do a new install). When XP gets to the point where it says there is already an OS on the harddrive, it will give you the option to Repai. At this point Repair will install overtop and make changes in terms of hardware and drivers. A reformat is always the best way to go but this option gives you an opportunity to save your data. Good luck and keep plugging away.

i checked all connections and the green led is lit up on the board. the plug for the front panel does plug in but it leaves a few pins left over so i dunno.

    What Model MOBO is this?
In the mobo manual should be layout & picture of the front panel header of your mobo.
The only connection you'll need to power up is the, is for your power button on your case.
If you have onboard speaker plug that in too, so you can get the diagnostic beeps during post up.
Your gateway case may have a front panel plug that is exclusive to Gateway, if that's the case ya might have a little custom wiring ahead of you.

It is normal to have some left over pins, on your mobo front panel header, not all cases have the same stuff to plug in, sometimes how they are labeled is different.

i dont have the option to plug in a few my front panel plug includes all u mentioned in one plug ,so i guess it the wiring route if only i had a diagram to go by.

I guessing thats your problem, you can cut the plug, trace wires, but you'll need new connector's that will fit your mobo front pannel??
Basic front pannel stuff = power switch/HDD led/power led/reset switch/internal speaker. ( these listed are two wires each)
The Only one ya need, is Power switch.

Got a local pc shop around ya they could probably help ya out with some parts.

Another option, buy new ATX case? ( most dont come with wiring diagram but the front pannel leads are almost always marked,)

ok found diagrams for both asus board and old power switch. it shows my old switch pin 8 being a ground and pin 8 on the asus board as a ground also pin 10 on the asus board needs to be connected to pwr which pin 10 on the switch shows not used. so that mean all i have to do is move a wire on the old switch that is + 5v to pin 10 and then i should be set??? thanks http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/INTEL/2515568/251556819.shtml link to my old switch looked in my manual for the asus diagram which is a p4sp-mx so you can see if im looking at this right?
