I bought a new computer a few weeks ago and I think my motherboard battery is dead/dying. The computer itself isint too new so it may of been sitting around for a while. My time doesnt work and I hear a strange beap once and a while.

I was told that if it wasnt replaced I could lose all bios. I dont know much about computers so what should I do? If nothing else will happen im fine with it.

If your bios is on default setting its nothing to get excited about, keep the pc plugged in while you change the battery and you will lose nothing. Even if you lose your settings you can just set default and not worry. ed

Oh ok. Any ways to see if my battery is actually dying? And err what are bios exactly?

If you go into setup when your pc is booting up [f2 i think] some bios's will show you the voltage on that battery, somebody may need to correct me ,but somewhere in the 3.2 volt range is good. Other than that i think they are around $3 to replace. ed

Another thing, your date and time should stay once set if you dont lose power to the pc, just shutting it down dosent hurt, unplugging the pc, you will lose time and date. ed

    Wrong

The MOBO/CMOS Battery if in working order will maintain your Time & date while PC is unplugged, or powered off.

If a PC is having problems keeping Time & Date, The first thing to do is replace the MOBO/CMOS Battery (A dead or weak battery is the primariry cause of this problem)

When a MOBO battery is replaced This will return the system BIOS to it's default settings, No Big deal.
If the Poster has never made any changes in BIOS His or Her system is probably running on Default settings anyway so nothing will be different anyway other than the need to reset the Time & date.

One could always enter BIOS write down all of thier settings, then replace Battery, reboot PC, enter BIOS, then set Time & Date, then check all BIOS setting if any thing is different then before, Simply change them :)
