...but the power supply connector only has 20.

I just put together a new 64 system, but the power supply from the XionII case only has 20 pins, and the board has 24. Is there an adapter available, or should I buy a power supply with 24 pin connector? At newegg, they don't mention much in the way of pin numbers, so I'm a bit stumped.

    Here's the case I bought

    And here's the Motherboard

    Suggestions?

Hmmmm, there are power supplies with the option to add on the extra 4 pins, like one I've just bought actually, but I've seen adaptors around the place that stepup the 20pin to 24pin, so I guess you just got to look around.

I ran into the same ordeal with the Asus A8N SLI Deluxe. You DONT need an adapter.

the extra pins are for SLI. the system will run just fine with the 20 pin plugged in, leaving the bottom 4 pins on the motherboard empty.

to get around this, there should be a standard ATX power plug somewhere near the PCI-Express graphics card slot. It will look like the auxiliary power that are on Hard drives and CD-ROMS.

Keep in mind, however, that the Power Supply that came with your case is by no means a reputable 450w PSU, and even running a single video card might fail. (as happened in my brother's system as well). If you can afford a nice PSU, go for it, or plan to upgrade soon. this one is a very good deal for a nice PSU http://www.provantage.com/buy-7ants...supply-antec-supplies-cables-neo-shopping.htm

Okay, so I have the 20 pin plugged into the motherboard, with 4 pins empty, but the keyboard isn't being recognized. I've tried 2 different keyboards. I had thought the problem was the connection.....
So, I have 2 200G Hard drives, a DVD burner, and this video card:.

Is my power supply failing? Why won't the board respond to my keyboard? Do you have any other suggestions?

    Thanks for the help, everyone.

You absolutely should get the 24 pin power supply. I am running a
Tyan K7 Thunder scsi mobo that has that. I wanted to do the same thing
you are asking about so I did some hunting around and I found a
nice pic of melted wires from somebody that tried doing that.
I actually have the adaptor wires that I purchased first but never used.
It is NOT a good idea. Much better to fork over the hundred bucks for the proper power supply. If you scan through pricewatch you will find several vendors.

Mine took an Enermax 460w EG465P-VE
It was 103 bucks shipped, a year ago.

Where does it say anything about the pin number on the power supplies? I mean, how did you know this power supply had 24 pin connectors? I can't seem to find any info on this.

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

It was good old fashioned hard work of following one google search after
another after another pricewatch link after another pricewatch link.
From there I wound up with 3 or 4 likely suspects and the Enermax
was the best quality per dollar ps that I could find with a 24 pin
connector. Unless you're lucky enough to be able to use the Enermax PS
that I listed, you are going to have to do some research.
But one good place to start is the manufacturer of your mobo.
Because it is a 24 pin mobo, they may have some suggested
power supplies to use. Good for a start. Tyan had some as well.
Most of them were an arm and a leg but it got me started.

    For what it's worth....
I'm finding my power supply that I paid 103 dollars for last year
for just 70 dollars shipped on pricewatch. Try to find out if it will
work on your motherboard. I highly recommend this ps.
I'm running four 10,000 rpm Seagate scsi drives on my computer
without ever having so much as a stutter step. And this comp
is on for @15 hours a day.

MSI I have the non SLI version and my manual says I can use a 20 pin connector.

OK, then that is nothing like the Tyan. The Tyan won't run on a 20 pin
    power supply.

Let me get something straight. your power suply doesnt NEED a 24 pin connector for any SLI motherboard I am aware of, nor do you NEED a new power supply, though I would recommend a new one that performs well.

if your current PSU was failing, you wouldnt have to guess, it would either not work, or performance would be dismal.

Most new PSU's (including the one I linked you to) have a 20/24 pin connector (the 4 pin can be disconnected). I strongly recommend that PSU as it is the best deal for the price right now. upward from there are OCZ PowerStream 480 and 520, and PC Power & Cooling TurboCool 510

also, is your keyboard USB? can you access the BIOS? if so, you might just have to turn on Legacy USB support (so the motherboard controlls it instead of the OS)

Okay, that clarifies it for me, and since I just bought the whole system and am now out of cash, I will use the current power supply that I own.

Which brings me to the other problem: The keyboard isn't working. What happens is this: I start the computer, and it gets to a screen which says "select <Tab> for Post, or <Delete> to enter setup" I want to enter setup, so I can configure my Bios and put the operating system on the computer, but I can't get any farther then that screen. What's up?

well usually the motheboard should assume legacy USB support until after POST, but it doesnt seem to respond in your case. Have you tried a different USB port? if that doesnt work, by chance do you have a ps/2 keyboard lying around that you could use to access the BIOS and enable legacy usb support?

Maybe I should try a usb keyboard...

Thanks for the link bchivers, I registered, and am looking for answers there as well.
Would it be possible that the keyboard plug on the board itself is damaged? Maybe a usb keyboard will help narrow down the problem, I'm borrowing one tomorrow.
    Thanks again,
    Eric

Not sure but I think if it says ATX then it is 24 pin.

No, mine is ATX, not sure if 24 pin is something new with the 64 boards, or what.

24 pin PSU are Know as 2.0 compliant "ATX12V v2.0" I think most if not all can be used on 20 pin MOBO's as 4 of the 24 pins are detachable.

I also would add that for most any PSU you can go to Manufactures web site and get detailed Info/manuals/pictures/spec's etc.

The Motherboard power connector has changed from 20 pins to 24 pins to better handel loads on the PCI Express bus.
