Guys, I have a HP Pavilion 533. The motherboard crashed. Do you know what motherboards can be used with this comp? I know software, but hardware is another world to me. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

whaddya mean "crashed"? does it not turn on anymore? whats the deal yo :p

if we cant fix it, its gonna be hard to find a mobo that will fit in the case but we'll figure that out later if we need to

Well, it will come on in safe mode, but if you try to load up normal it shuts down. I took it to a shop and they said the mobo had a short in it somewhere. I'm about ready to just trash it all and buy a new one...

Are you overclocking and if so by too much?

Can't see a shorted mobo allowing boot to safe mode. Normally if the pc will run OK in safe mode its not hardware but a driver.

When you get to the safe mode options screen, enable debugging and let it boot to the crash. Then get the minidump file (somenumber.dmp at the time of crash) and post it for analysis here. Rename it .txt

Will do. As soon as I get it back from the shop. For some reason they're never in anymore and I've not picked it back up yet. I thought the same thing. If it will boot in safe mode then it can't have a bad mobo. Hopefully I will have it back by tomorrow and can post the info. Thanks!

Yeah, I'm thinking it's a software problem, NOT a motherboard problem. There is a chance that one of the on board devices (like the sound, LAN, video) has some messed up circuitry, and when the driver tries to kick in the system crashes or whatever, but that's unlikely... it's probably the OS is messed up...

that's what the comp shop is saying, that there is a short in the board somewhere. If that's the case, I don't have a choice but to buy a new mobo, right? Or a new comp all together.

Ask yourself this and the shop you put so much faith in.

If it's not a motherboard short how will changing it fix the problem?
Changing the mobo is the ultimate transplant and may well lead to you having to re-activate Windows.

Post some fault and system details here or get a second opinion

Good point guys. Like I said, I'm ignorant when it comes to hardware things. I've still not got the comp back, but as soon as I do I'll post some diagnostics on here. Thanks again for all the help!!
