greets all, been awhile since i've had to come looking for help here. last time worked like a charm, let's see how this time goes.
i've recently re-installed xp sp3 on an older (but still great shape) computer. the install went fine, but once completed i discovered that there's no internet connectivity at all. when i looked into that using the device manager i see a big yellow question mark related to the network adapter. i asked a classmate about it (ITT student here, but only 2nd quarter), and he suggesed i try updating the mobo's driver.
herein lies my challenge: I've looked everywhere for the past 3 hours and can't find a single download for my type of board (acpi\pnp0c01\1).
if any of you could help, all i need is to be pointed in the right direction (a direct link would be splendid), and i can get my fossilized puter back online.
    thanks in advance,
    grison

we need to get the model number of your motherboard so we can find the lan driver for it. Go ahead and run speccy (available from majorgeeks, just search for it), and attach the report here in your next message.

Speccy doesn't work to well with xp as it misses quite a bit of info out....

    download and install everest....

and post the report in your next post. Also if you can supply us with the make and model of your machine and any service tags (if it is a dell ),the more info the quicker the fix can be found.

just got done installing and running speccy, got hit with "access denied" for every field it supplies info on, then the program crashed out asking if i wanted to send an error report (as if the comp. could make a connection in the first place).
everest, huh? will i be able to install it on a machine w/no connection?

yes you can everest on that machine with no connection, download and save it to disc or flash drive on the machine you are using to post then install on the machine we need the info about. save the report to disc or flash drive then post it here. BUT if you don't want to go through that again the just tell me the make and model of the machine and any service tags it may have cos i will be able to work just off that info.

i'm curious, if i can't find a driver that will fix my connection problem, will a store bought pnp network card work?

It's right there on the page, all you have to do is select your operating system and a dowload type (drivers). Then the lan driver will appear in the list of drivers.

found it (thanks for pointing out the way), but it will not install:
The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. contact your support personnel for assistance.

I am not running safe mode, and this is a brand spankin' new install of XP.
    officially stumped here now...

thank you for showing me that, alas, after following the steps outlined in that link i'm still having the same problem. it says towards the end that if that procedure did'nt work, re-install the os.
i'm becoming more and more convinced that no matter what solutions i'm shown, this thing will not behave like it should, and i'll now have to re-transfer everythng i put back on it (again) and chuck this thing out the window.
thanks for your time and help anyway guys, we tried.

I think you just need to do a clean format and install of Windows. I bet your problems with the installer go away, and you are able to install the LAN driver without problem.

i tried once more, this time ater installing windows' latest installer proggy.
same error message about either being improperly configured or running in safe mode.
BLAH! out the window after saving baby pics...

that's just it, this WAS a clean new install, the problem was right there from the get-go.
before the puter learns to fly, i need to re-ask something that was'nt answered from earlier: should getting and putting in a store bought network card work around this? everything else on the machine is fine, i just want connectivity back.
