    Hi guys,

long time site-lover, first time poster, just have to say this place is great, helps me out so much so kudos to those here.

On to business though... hope you guys can help me, my Asus K8N motherboard, reliable as it was, has finally given up on me. I did put it through some abuse though, I don't blame it :-o

So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good replacement? I'm not a n00b when it comes to PCs (I work in a data centre) but motherboards make my head spin and I don't trust myself to throw down £100+ on something that: (a) may not work
    (b) may be broken (by my clumsy ***)

That's my problem. I'm not sure what you guys are gonna need to know but just say what I should put down and I'll do it.

    Thanks in advance,
    jiinyus.

Hi and welcome to MG, I had similar problem a while ago and went to Ebay and found identical board, that way my processor, vid card, memory, HD's all would fit the board I just bought. If you want to upgrade motherboard you will most likely have to upgrade your processor as it will be a different socket and also memory will be different and maybe video card as well. So depending on how deep your pocket is will show you which way to go. Post the specs of your old rig.. ;)

Appreciate the quick response guys. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I've had the busiest weekend and have barely touched anything internet-like ^__^

I'm not sure of the exact spec of my PC. I'll open it up tonight and post more but off the top of my head, I have (and will need on my new mobo)...

Some form of Athlon 64 socket 754 processor (it's mobos and processors I can't deal with, everything else is fine, I'm not a complete douche I swear!!)
    Geforce FX5500 graphics card
    DDR2 memory
Gonna need about 4/5 PCI slots
    2 SCSIs (3's even better)

Ummm... Goddammit I wish I hadn't bought a customised PC sometimes.

    Cheers again, guys

So the best way to go now is to find another Motherboard that is a 754 Socket, that way all your other Hardware will fit. ;) Depending on what usage you do Gaming etc. depends on what type of mobo you will need as prices vary considerably.

Ya, you have to stick to an AGP/DDR mobo, your line about having DDR2 memory only applies to your graphics card. Since you seem to be satisfied with what you already have, I'd go for a new K8N some 30 lbs(don't have your currency key). It is 5 year old tech though it could last you another ten years depending on your power supply's health.

Oh, and custom built rigs are superior IMHO as one chooses the best components, I'm surprised that there are still people stocking this mobo. Lucky you and good luck.

EDIT: Something I just thought of is you might have to take the heat sink/fan assembly off the CPU first before being able to remove the CPU itself. I have an A8N-E and that's what I had to do. This would then entail cleaning the surfaces with say %85 isopropyl alcohol (cleaning kits are available but overpriced IMO) and re-applying the thermal compound such as Artic Silver 5 properly. If you built this yourself then the edit is moot.;)
