    Greetings,

I recently aquired a new P5LP-LE Motherboard in payment for repairing a computer. It's an Asus board manufactured for HP, and was a "Media center" board. I threw together a machine out of some stuff I had laying around, and bought a used Pent D dual core 3.20GHZ processor, 4 GB of DDR 2 RAM (4 X 1GB - PC2 5300 667 MHz DDR2 DIMMs). I had a Radeon HD 4870 video card available.

All went well with the build, except I noticed in BIOS the RAM is being reported as 32MB DIMMS. I installed XP Pro (32 bit) I had spare from an auction, and it is reading the RAM as expected, showing 3.6GB of installed RAM. Various benchmarks and such seem to indicate the system is using the full amount of RAM as it should.

Never ran into this issue before. Odd thing is, programs like CPU-Z and Everest read each DIMM as 512MBs, while other programs read it as 128, 256, etc. Not a big deal, because it's an outdated board to begin with. Just wondering if anyone has had this issue before. I've made a cursory search for maybe an updated BIOS and didn't see any that dealt with this specific issue.

Oddly enough the BIOS update, especially on an older motherboard with XP is exactly where I would go. I found a 5.23 update and although it does not mention a memory issue I also found references to other updates and I am unaware of what other fixes were applied. My guess is there was easily 2 other updates as I am finding old references to 5.17, 5.18, etc.

If you don't want to update the BIOS you might also try resetting it to new however it seems this board had its share of BIOS issues fixed so I would go for the update:

Thank you, sir. I'll give it a shot.

I'd never had that issue before, and the different benchmark and testing programs giving different results made it even more strange. Can't complain though - pretty much a free board any way :)

Just an update - tried flashing the BIOS, but the latest/last version requires Vista to run the installer. I find that odd, but it is an OEM board.

I did manage to flash the BIOS to version 3.17, which is at least newer then then the version I had . . . but it didn't fix the memory reporting issue. But, so far it doesn't seem to be making any difference in the operation of the PC. The OS sees all the RAM, and by all appearences seems to be making use of it, so I'm going to let it go.

For now, anyway. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to things like this :-D

It tasks me! It tasks me, and I shall have it! ;)
