Motherboard may be dead?

I recently purchased a motherboard on Ebay that was supposed to be a remanufactured, working board. It is a KM2M Combo MS 6738 Ver.1.0. I bought it to install in my daughters computer that had been crashing with the Intel Socket 370 board she had in it. The KM2M board is a nice board (I have it in my computer, and it is a very sound and stable board with nice features like DDR or SDRAM capability).
Anyway, I was told that all it needed was a new battery. I hooked it up, and got no power when hitting the power button. Figuring I could have hooked it up wrong, or the supply cable was not compatible, I used a screwdriver to "jump start" the board. When I do this, the cpu fan spins for about a half a second like it wants to fire up, but then it stops and I get nothing out of it. There are no visible signs of death like blown or bulging capacitors, and everthing seems to be connected properly. I even checked the JBat1 to make sure the CMOS jumper was in the correct position. Does anyone have any idea if this board is dead, or if there is anyway to test it further that I don't know about? Please help....you know how a 12 year old girl gets when she doesn't have her COMPUTER!
Thanks, and any other information you might need, just ask.....I don't know a whole lot about computers, so be gentle with me!

Could be the power supply ..... can you swap it out?

I was thinking the power supply, but it worked fine with the other board (it just crashed alot, which was why we were changing it). I then installed another board from my sons computer, and it worked fine with that one as well. I'm at a loss here! Any other suggestions? Thanks!

The power supply could give intermittent faults ..... try another power supply or get into the bios and see what the voltages are reporting .... should not be over or under 5% of ratings.
Sorry .... jsut notice you can't boot up ....so if you can, put it into another computer and then check it.

Have you changed out the battery then or are you trying to boot without it in as it wont, check the atx 12v is connected if it has one and the cmos reset jumper is one pins 1-2

I cant think of any scenario someone would take the battery and not install a fresh one and come to the conclusion its the battery causing the problem, more like they have had a problem with the board assumed the board needed a new battery took out the old one and never tested with a new one

You may have bought a dud board :(

I have to agree with Rikky. It sounds a little shady that they didn't include a new battery. A new CMOS battery is about $3-4 (and that's for an expensive one).

I figured it out guys! DUH! I just realized that it has the P4 plug on the board, and my power supply didn't have that plug on it! I borrowed one from my neighbors old computer, and it fired right up! His power supply is too big to fit in the HP case though, so I guess I'll have to buy a new one to fit in....any ideas? My daughters computer is an HP Pavilion XT 936.
Also, I keep getting an error code when Windows starts up....it's the blue screen one that asks "If this is the first time you've received this error message, restart the computer.....", but when I restart I get the same thing. Should I just reinstall a clean Windows XP, or is there something else going on here?
Thanks for all the help! You guys are great!

Try a repair installation ..... post back if you need instructions on how to...

    Hey guys,
I did the repair installation, and everything worked fine...for about a day! Now, I keep getting the blue screen of death on startup....it will go through the boot up procedure, then it goes to the black screen telling me that a "previous attempt had failed...start windows normally?"....I've tried to start normally, start in safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. but it keeps freezing up on me. I've actually gotten it to boot up to the Windows XP log on page, but then freezes again. Could it be that the hard drive was failing before, and not the motherboard? Any ideas on how to test the hard drive when I can't get it to boot up? Could it be a hardware conflict, and how do I know that? Please help! Thanks again for you help!

im pretty sure the easiest way to test the hard drive is to stick it a known working computer, i know i did that with my HD when i thought it was broke, but it worked fine, found out later on it was a RAM problem.

    Try a clean install instead.

Just tried HD in another computer and it worked fine. I've also changed the memory sticks to make sure that it wasn't a ram problem (no problem there!). I had the motherboard out of the computer while I was testing and changing everything....just installed the board back in the case and hooked everything back up, and I get NOTHING! No power at all! I'm fed up.....I have to walk away from it for a while, or I'll end up having to replace not only the computer, but a new double hung window....when I THROW IT THROUGH IT! I'll mess with it later or tomorrow! I have no more patience!

    Wrong
The easiest way to test one, would be to run the HDD Manufactures Diagnostic Utility.
They are, By the way, Free!

Check for short or something grounding your MOBO, Are the MOBO standoff's in the correct positions?

If you have been trying different Memory, you might need to reset CMOS, even if you havent, reset CMOS anyway.

The board was grounding out on the case. I fixed that problem....now I'm back to my original problem of crashing on boot up.....

I have been trying to do a clean install, but the computer keeps freezing up on "Setup is inspecting your computer....". I don't know what the heck is wrong with this. I put the hard drive in another computer and it worked fine for over an hour. Then when I reinstalled it in my daughters computer, it just freezes on boot up! I don't know what else to do!?! Any more suggestions? Please help!

We're (I) am running out of ideas ....good catch on the short with the stand-offs, though. If the hhd works fine in another 'puter, and you've checked (swapped - tried one stick at a time , or ram from another computer that has the same type that you know is good) ram, did you also swap power supply? .....it's coming down to mobo, I'm afraid. Any condenser domed up....leaking that you can see?

I checked the memory one stick at a time, HDD works fine in other computers, and I purchased a brand new power supply for this computer. The board is supposed to be remanufactured in new condition, and did work fine for about a day or so. There doesn't appear to be any leaking or bulging caps, or anything else that would be obvious to the board not functioning properly. Do you think I may have to flash the BIOS? I hate doing that, because I know things can go terribly wrong with that (not that it would be any worse than it is now!). Any other thoughts?

At this poijnt, I'd be inclined to contact the person you bought it from or e-bay. You've effectively eliminated just about everything other than the mobo.

When you reset the cmos did you check the date. If you didn't change the date you'll get a bsod. I would run something like knopix to see if it will boot that way. I had this problem it ended up being a bad ide cable.

Where can I find knopix and how do I use that program/ what does it do, etc.? Meanwhile, I'll try booting with a different ide cable and see if that works.

Knopix is a bootable version of linux, it boots from a cd, and it recognizes all of the drives ect, and it does it with out using the hard drive. this will check your drive, your copy of XP, and a few other hard drive related features. I would also use the UBCD- ultimate boot cd. It is a disk with many tools, based on linux. It will allow you to test your memory, processor. Google search each one and you will find many sites that deal with both.

I tried to download the UBCD, but it didn't work for me. Downloaded it and burned to a disc, but the disc wouldn't work (iso format or something). I couldn't find any downloads for the knopix....at least any that seem simple enough for me to understand! I think I need to just trash this motherboard, and start over.:(

The only thing I"m worried about is is you trash the mobo, and thats not the problem.
