ABIT is a company I've heard very little about in the last few years, though previously, they had a good reputation for a number of years. The 'board may be close to 5 years old, if there was one 'el cheapo' component built into it, it could be close to failure sometime soon; see here for an extreme example of this.

This Newegg link should take you to reviews by verified ownrs of this 'board for you to study, if you haven't done so already.

For the RAM compatiblility, Crucial no longer list any 512MB modules for this 'board and a Google search for aw8d bl646 (bl646 being the first part of the RAM code) turns up zero hits. From this, I would guess the RAM is not compatible.

This motherboard was introduced in 2006 so it is old technology and as such will not support Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Duo CPUs so beware you do not buy a mobo that is "not fit for purpose"

If you are intent on upgrading look around the internet for new boards that are 775 compatible (there are plenty)

Also remember if you change the motherboard you will need to buy a new OS as your existing OS will not activate on a new mobo.

That is only true if he is using an OEM copy of Windows. If he's using a retail copy, MS will activate it for him if necessary.
