Motherboard Upgrade For Overclocking?

    Last year I did a new build with a Core i5-8600K and an ASRock H370 micro-ATX motherboard.
    Now I'm considering a motherboard upgrade to a Z390 to enable overclocking.

    The two boards I'm considering are:

    I think the Gigabyte board is better, it's the same size as my current board and the rear connections are perfect.
    My case is a mid-tower Fractal Meshify C.

    I have no experience with overclocking, so ease of use and auto presets available with the MoBo are a major interest. I would like an overclock to about 4.8MZ. I think that would be sufficient. I will replace the CPU cooler.

    Which motherboard would be easier to overclock with?
    How much performance increase will I get with the motherboard's default OC settings, or with a 4.8MZ OC?

    I may have a possibility of selling the motherboard, CPU, cooler and maybe RAM as a package.
    If I did that, I might build with a new Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-9600K.

    Suggestions and comments?
    Thanks!

    If you go for the gigabyte board, they are a sweet overclocker with an array of options available, including advanced freq and voltage settings!

    Good video guide here!

    If you decide to keep your current CPU and RAM, you need to check the QVLs (qualified vendors lists) for each of those boards to make sure your current RAM and CPU are compatible with the new boards. These lists can be found on the boards' webpages. You should ensure the CPU is listed. There are too many RAM makers and models for board makers to test and verify them all so you don't have to buy listed RAM. But you should buy RAM with the same specs as listed RAM.

    Just remember, in terms of software licensing, a new motherboard constitutes a new computer and new computers typically need new Windows licenses. If your current license is an OEM/System Builders license, as most are, to be legal you will need to budget for a new license too.

    I should have mentioned that, for the current time, the upgrade computer has Linux only.
    Therefore, there are no licensing issues and I can not use the Windows only benchmarking and diagnostic tools.

    @Replicator
    Thanks for the link. I watched some of that video, but I think that's too involved/complex for me,
    and as mentioned, I can't use the Windows benchmarking tools.

    I got lucky and found the MSI board at Newegg for $99 as a cyber monday special - currently backordered.

    Also, I found the following video for MSI overclocking that looks like it will be very helpful.

    @Digerati
    Thanks for the heads up. I had already checked RAM and CPU compatibility for both of those boards.
    My Windows 10 license on another machine is OEM and an upgrade from Windows 7.

    I've been looking at lots of videos and reviews of CPU coolers.
    I'd prefer a downflow cooler. I like this one which should be sufficient for my uses.

    Then being OEM, that license is inextricably tied to the "O"riginal "E"quipment - that is, the motherboard on the other machine. To be legal, you will need to purchase a new Windows license. OEM licenses are not legally transferable to a new computer under any circumstances.

    Alternatively, you can stick with Linux.

    Thanks, Digerati.
    Understood. I was not planning to transfer.
