If you're looking for the best bang for buck then I would really recommend AMD.

If you want breakneck speed I would suggest Intel.

    I recommend the following products.

    CPU - Amd Phenom X3 720

    MOBO - GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P AM3

    RAM - Mushkin 2x2GB

Okay there are always the important questions you need to define before any reasonable advice can be given.

    1. What are the main purposes you want the machine for? Gaming, surfing and video transcoding, CAD, etc etc

    2. What sort of budget do you have?

Most modern mobo's will have 5.1-8.1 Channel HD Audio, surround sound capacity in-built.

well it will be mostly for surfing and for my wife doing her online college. we also do alot of music downloading and for video podcast. mostly just for general use. but i would like to have a nice unit too don't want to buy a cheap everyday throw in. will spend around 250 to 300

You won't need alot of power for that.

250 - 300 isn't much for a computer but it can be done for what you are doing.

Okay another important question is how much can you recycle from your current build and what are they? e.g.
    - RAM: 2x1Gb DDR2 667 MHz
    - Video Card
    etc etc.

As much info on the current parts as possible so we can ensure new parts are compatible.
